The FT times says Biden already decided to transfer atacms before the Zelensky visit
In fairness, Biden has probably decided it at least five times this year, the problem was Biden remembering what he decided in time to implement it. By the time they manage to explain to him that Gorbachev's not leading the USSR anymore they have to break for lunch and then he starts petitioning president Reagen to send arms to the Taliban to help liberate Afghanistan from Russia :p

Not announcing atacms before they are used is probably for the best, I'm sure the same happened with Storm Shadow.

What is interesting is that they are saying it will be the cluster munitions type getting sent. I think this might suggest troop concentrations far behind the lines will be the target rather than the type of targets Storm Shadow has been used against. I'm guessing troop concentrations will have less AA than naval bases too.

Reminder that NATO ally Turkey gave up the right to buy F35s in order to purchase russian S-400 missile defence system
While comical, it should be noted that this never actually happened.

What actually happened was that Turkey ordered Russian SAM systems instead of American SAM systems because Trump refused to give them competitive pricing on Patriot systems like every other US ally got/gets, then Trump got annoyed that his winning business acumen had failed publicly and as punishment for shopping elsewhere the genius that is Trump kicked Turkey out of the F-35 program.

"You don't wanna pay us inflated prices for our SAMs!?! Fine! You're not allowed to pay us for our aircraft either!!!" - (Not an actual Trump quote, it would normally be obvious but I feel it important to mention due to who I'm mocking).

In reality if operating Russian built SAM systems made you ineligible to participate in the F-35 program then Greece/Poland would have been banned. NB Greece is getting Patriots in exchange for sending Ukraine it's Russian missiles, maybe Turkey could cut a deal now.

Look out for an announcement of French made Mirage 2000D (ground attack version) to be supplied to Ukraine in the few days. There's a delegation from Ukraine's air force in France right now discussing the potential transfer.

Those are supposed to be very capable. Opens up wider weapons options too.

While this is supposed to be a joke, it is quite worrying. The first thing pretty much anybody over the age of 20 is going to think of when seeing that video is the second plane slamming into WTC2.

There is a real danger that footage like this will finally give Putin the public support he would need to either move Russia to a proper war footing or actually declare war, hopefully not.

****Ocks to what Putin thinks or the public support. The west is only trickling kit and intel into Ukraine. We have not begun to really ramp up production to replace stock levels either.

No he needs a firm brick wall of GTFO mofo.

Atacms is better suited. Can be launched from the ground with the systems they already have. Plus the US have actually stopped using them, so again, it cheaper to give them away than the millions to decommission them.

According to the National Defense Authorization Act 2023 Pentagon plans to purchase 1700 ATACMS so there's still a place for them.

That is not quite right.

It was specifically the S-400 system (the latest Russian strategic SAM) that was the "breaking point" between the US and Turkey, rather than just "any" Russian SAM Systems, which is why Poland with it's far older systems (almost obsolete mid 50's-60's designs like the SA3, SA-6, SA-9 etc) has been allowed to buy the F-35 despite still having Russian SAMs.

Greece until recently was blocked from buying the F-35 until it's far newer S-300 systems (bought late 90's) were removed, which in this case has happened as they've been given to Ukraine. They are still allowed to buy F-35 despite them still owning Russian SA-15 and SA-9 SAMs as a proviso of the deal was immediately stopping any maintenance on these by Russian companies and eventual removal of them.

So both are buying F-35's despite still having "some" actively used Russian SAMs in their military.

Which color of the line has been crossed now?

I’d imagine that somewhere deep down in the bowels of the Kremlin, there’s a dude in a dingy office and an extravagant uniform with a haggard expression and a thoroughly dog-eared copy of a Dulux colour chart, desperately flicking through it while trying to find an abstract colour that he hasn’t crossed out yet.
