You’d monitor and observe the reactions/interactions with the daughters and sexual partners. That would tell you if he was assassinated and run by a body double.

The secret services of every country know the relationship between the family and partners of leaders is a good thermometer of psychological state.

Yes makes complete sense to blow up a huge part of revenue producing infrastructure, sealing the fact they cannot sell again in future, losing negotiation power and which cost an arm and a leg to build.......I mean simply turning the supply off wouldn't have worked?!

I would be the first to admit that the Russians would be the dumbest ***** on this planet if they blew up their own pipeline in the middle of the sea.

But really? I can think of far far far more groups that would have liked to see it go.

Which would make sense if Russia was a rational actor, but Russia isn't.

You say that but in what time frame would we be using these pipelines from Russia again? They had shut them off, and proven they would shut them off when they felt like it.

Resuming supply from nordstream would have been years away, if at all, so no real impact of this vs seeking alternatives anyway, which is probably a better long term bet.
 
@HungryHippos I was thinking more of how we ended up here strategic mistakes. Germany’s rash embrace of German gas, the wilful ignorance of Russias strategic concerns. Loads of stuff. Obama and Iran, Bush and Iraq etc. The 21st Century has been a masterclass in strategic hubris and shortsightedness. Not specifically Nord Stream, although Europes embraces of self defeating sanctions and the US’s attack on its own hegemony of global finance are pretty dumb too.

Why not Russia? It was defunct and they get to use it as propaganda.
