West is getting squeezed. As said playing field is very different now. So often west has "imposed sanctions" on bad behaviour. But it's basically lip service.

I suppose putin can't be bothered to listen anymore and has decided west is weak and fractured and toothless enough to roll over.

China will likely do whatever it wants too.

Where's the red line? I'm not even sure if nato countries are that red line

The West's time as a superpower is diminishing. Biden was probably the final nail in the coffin.

It reminds me of Bald and Bankrupt, does anyone here watch him? He is an English guy who has been making travel videos of former Soviet countries in Eastern Europe for many years now. Has quite a sizeable following online. He often has conversations with the people from those former USSR countries and usually asks them about the past and today and very very often the people he speaks to say that things were better when they were under Soviet rule.

I mean, he's talking to them in Russian, there is an unconscious bias there to start with just by communicating in the language. I do wonder if it's just a case of rose-tinted glasses. Everyone I know of at a certain age looks back at their own past fondly, remembering how things were better back then. To me, it's just a human condition, not necessary accurate to measure.

Yes we've been on the decline for some time. Especially Europea. All we have in UK services

Only way to raise income is to increase tax. Costs going up all the time as east now compete with us for resources.

I for one welcome our new Russian overlords!

Its probably a generational thing and that the older generations in those countries were actually used to having everything (in terms of infrastructure, construction, maintenance etc) done for them and now that its gone its left a void of power and things not getting done. Whereas I imagine the younger generations enjoy the freedoms more

Well, he's not wrong. Just look at Boris. A self-serving, wet, selfish, sodden clump of a PM.

Yet the UK government came out with a robust 1st round of sanctions against Russian banks and some significant Russian individuals with significant wealth. This was prior to a response from the US. The UK has further backed this up today with an explanation that further sanctions haven't yet been tabled because it's important to have some in reserve to further respond upon Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Reservists called up. It's getting spicy.

Ahead of a possible large-scale Russian invasion, Ukraine's government has moved to introduce a 30-day state of emergency, call up military reservists between the ages of 18 and 60 and allow ordinary civilians to carry firearms.

Why it matters: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday that he does not expect an "all-out war against Ukraine" but that he will "put Ukraine on a war footing" if there is a "broad escalation" from Russia. [Here's the latest on Russia-Ukraine tensions.]

Details: The state of emergency will apply to all of Ukraine except for the territory in the east occupied by Russian and pro-Russian separatist forces.

In 1996, economist Thomas Friedman observed that no two countries that both had McDonald's had fought a war against each other since they got McDonald's. That hasn't aged well.

T.a.t.u. they were Russian

I enjoyed their first two songs, but bloody hell those girls were a train wreck. Their fake 'underage lesbian' shtick didn't take long to fall apart, and behind the scenes it was even more chaotic.

I digress, but the headline here is Boris goes 30 mins without telling a porkie (we think)

He'll make sure he's fine. That's all he cares about. He's no threat to Russia and they know it.
