Tin foil hat time, anyone thinking about taking a few hundred quid out, in cash, to have just in case the russians target the financial systems?

If they go to that kind of lengths in this day and age the disruption will likely affect a lot of the backend systems as well rendering cash relatively less useful than it used to be :s best bet really is trying to avoid being in a position where you need to spend money for a few days if it comes to it.

It is unlikely to happen though as any significant disruption of that nature risks a far more escalated war situation and Russia doesn't appear to be gearing up to take on a broader conflict.

If you want to spend cash in the supermarket, still has to be through a computerised till or the input maw of the self service checkout.

Could we not make Russian cyber attacks less of a problem by cutting them off western communication networks. I know we can't disconnect them completely but wouldn't it significantly reduce their bandwidth.

Edit: Seems Russia has prepared for this along with everything else the West is threatening.

If they were bent on that direction they'd already have cells spread out globally (and probably do) who could launch those kind of attacks. In fact there would probably be little direct connection to Russia.

Are we saying nato haven’t broken any agreements ?

Quite apart from the utter irrelevance of NATO to a Russian invasion of non-NATO Ukraine, what agreement are you claiming has been broken? Are you repeating the Putinist lie that NATO committed to no Eastern expansion?

Apparently USSR and Russia tried to join NATO 4 times and was rebuffed.

We probably should have let them in.

In a modified suitable version for the forum of the old saying, its better to have your enemy peeing out of the tent than peeing in to the tent.

Worth a read to get both sides. This is a different one to what was posted before and goes into history a bit more and their issues with nato/us

Thanks for the link. I believe it is useful to get both sides. Even if you don't agree with their perspective on things.

I have a Ukrainian friend who kind of sees himself as more Russian (even though he lives in the west of Ukraine) we have often discussed issues from different perspectives. He, with his "Russian propaganda" and me with my "Western propaganda"

It's very useful to hear how other people see a situation from litterally the polar opposite of your own beliefs.

Putin will have planned for this years in advance, being cut off from the west that is. They will have put measures in place to ensure they can be as self sufficient as possible and still operate as a country under strict sanctions.

I don't even think he cares much about what sanctions are put in place, he has a goal and he will achieve his goal and then negotiate afterwards.

I've worked with various Ukrainians over the years who were almost offended I referred to them as such, quite adamant they are Russians. One guy got very irate, red faced and stormed off when I was having a flippant joke about Putin behind a bit of a mad man. This was probably a good 8/9 years ago though.

Cyberattack is a vague term, what sort of things could they do that would affect us all negatively?
Lots…

Botnets could make the global web crawl
Take down isps/cloud providers with exploits both known and unknown
Similar attacks to the NHS ransomwsre attack
Exploit vulnerabilities at utility providers

Anything coming out of Russia is propaganda though. There is pretty much no media outlet not under the Kremlin's thumb.

Russian state TV is now following up on Putin's speech with a graphic diagramming territorial "gifts" to Ukraine from Russian Czars, Stalin, Lenin and Khrushchev.

The yellow bit in the middle is labeled "Ukraine."
