There are no 'breakaway areas.' There are occupied Ukrainian territories.

Supposedly could hear the strikes on Ukraine from Moldova - Moldova generally in the Russian sphere of influence so would be a bit strange if it was attacked (even with the whole deal with Transnistria) - if so that significantly alters things.

So far all the live cams I can find of Mariupol shows people going around their day as normal - very occasional distant bang - at least these locations no sign of any combat ongoing.

I'm going for the latter. There is an amphibious landing in Odessa and airstrikes, artillery and cruise missiles targeting Kyiv and other major cities.

I mean if they feel they can take South Ukraine and absorb Transnistria... why not just take Moldova as well?

He had battlegroups in Transnistria, it's not out of the realms for him to grab Moldova as well as Ukraine
 
If he attacks Moldova, I think that would be a game changer. Moldova is a permanent neutral country with no intentions to ever join Nato or allow western forces to be based there. Attacking an internationally recognised neutral country would, I think, greatly change attitudes

Not out of the realms but seems an unlikely move as they are relatively neutral and generally within the Russian sphere of influence generally speaking.
