You don't think Putin knew going in the worst that the west was prepared to do? Whatever it is does not compare to the thought of Ukraine eventually being part of NATO.

The only thing that might have deterred Putin was if the west already had troops in their masses already on the ground or was prepared to now deploy troops in support of Ukraine. That is extremely unlikely to happen, which is why Putin has moved on Ukraine with near impunity.

He didn't think the West would truly apply the necessary sanctions because he's made sure many of our politicians are corrupted. He's been proven right so far.

I guess Ukraine needs to play the long game here, don't do anything that Russian media can use to make Ukraine look like the aggressor, prepare for an insurgency campaign... hope that this becomes super costly for Russia.

Putin does need to try and boost his popularity if this conflict becomes costly in terms of sanctions, money and lives then it's not good for him.

Yes, this is really the time for people to be realistic. This could escalate into a global conflict with devastating consequences. Anything else is just denial.

I really wonder what Erdogan will do. Sure. Turkey is NATO but this is actually the kind of thing that Turkey would support. And Putin probably has his eye on those trade routes around the Black Sea.
 
sadly the west is run by corrupt politicians and mega companies, all they care about is money, we pretty much turning our backs on unkraine unless our leaders have the balls to cut russia off fully, which is highly unlikely. bet mcdonalds is still serving burgers in Moscow

Well this is the problem isn't it. The UK has become riddled with Russian money and influence and 99.99% of that is pro Putin because that's where the money came from and that's why it's influential. The Tory party and government have been targeted and complicit in this for decades and everyone that complained about it and pointed it out has been given side eye like they're looney. It's coming home to roost now. This is the Brexit people voted for.

I'd imagine on the 3rd scenario, that the US could deploy, and more importantly sustain and supply a far larger force than Russia ever could in a fictitious neutral arena, well away from their own homebases. (New Zealand super-power Thunderdome perhaps?)

Putin probably doesn't want that either, so there is latitude for us to do something. We certainly shouldn't just roll over and take it because it only emboldens him.
