Most lefties believe in mutual disarmament not unilateral. We also believe in peace treaties and strong alliances like NATO and the EU.

The error in that thinking is trusting your possible foes to actually do what they say. You trust Putin or alike to actually destroy their WoMD. As usual it's fantasy logic from the left based on somehow if you do good others will also act in good faith.

Inexpert analysis :

Sanctions won't work: Russian retaliation would be more painful and harder to bear for Europe than the sanctions placed on Russia.

Choices for the West, broadly, are 1- abandon Ukraine (provide humanitarian support, of course), 2- support insurgency in Ukraine, 3- full-scale war. Seems likely that only the first of those wouldn't result in huge loss of life and lengthy disruption. I think that's the calculation Putin has made.
IMO sanctions are a two way street. Everything the russians can't buy is money that you (the nations) won't get.

Anyone in this country opposed to us having or developing future nuclear deterrents.

We can't not have them. Its dangerous idealistic thinking to not having them.

I'm anti military in terms of USA size. But can't pretend we can all agree "no nukes guys? You cool with that?"

I know, part of the route to success for politicians is lying and not being trustworthy while all the time saying you won't lie and are trustworthy. It works wonders.

It's like, for some, lying is some great sin that people just won't do and can't do. Yet it happens all the time. It's embraced, it's policy and it's necessary for advancement in politics.

The west will breathe a sigh of relief if putin stops at ukraine. Even if he annexs the whole thing.

If he leaves power (dies) with that end result.
I'll call It a win vs the alternative.
That’s more sensible. The west doesn’t really care about Ukraine, certainty not the US who are the driving force of western politics. It will have been calculating and assessing how to benefit in the best way.

I am sure Putin is several steps ahead and foresaw sanctions. He also knows how dependent the West is on Russian oil.

Talking about it on Politics Live and they think Russia has built up enough funds to counter the effect of sanctions for 2 years. They also control oil, gas and wheat exports which can make life even more expensive in the west.

Putin might be mad but he's been planning this for a long time.

The west will survive without russian oil, or gas. Will russia survive by not being able to export it?

The threat of sanctions might not be a deterent but in the long run Russia will be isolated with ony the North koreian and the Chinese on their side, oh and Belarus whos troops are also involved.

The Banking system will collapse on them, they will find it difficult to move money about without Swift and that will hurt their other businesses.

He will stop at Ukrain as everyone else around him is in nato, thats a different ball game for Russia and not a game Putin will p[lay.

Sadly Ukrain is gone, it can't be stopped, all thats left is how many innocents die

Absolutely.

Russia can nigh on complete this invasion with just missiles if they wanted to.The 200k troops is just for show and mopping up.

I just can't see an effective insurgency when Russia has so much remote firepower.

Where’s the logic in a never ending arms race?
