Apart from the baltics and Finland there isn't anything of strategic value in Europe that I can see. Next stop is head south and get cosy with the middle easterns.

He wants the 3 lat, lith, est. But I find think its worth it to him.

Getting ukraine is absolutely a win. Putin gets some ego strokes. West can be thankful it isn't a radioactive wasteland.

The baltic states are members of NATO and, from what I remember, are among the few members meeting the spending commitments.

But all those Baltic states are already members of NATO so Putin will most probably stop at Ukraine. All that will probably happen is that the Baltic states get a reinforcement of arms and troops from NATO.

Both Lithuania and Estonia are NATO members - it would be a massive escalation for them to be attacked. Moldova isn't a member and has had spats with Moscow previously -it's very vulnerable.

I don't think (I hope) they aren't worth as much to go to nuclear war over. But that's up to him.

Hopefully he (and the Russian government/military heads) are still thinking rationally.

I think they’re be a very short, but bloody conventional war between NATO and Russian forces first. Both sides might see reason after they loose a few thousand troops in a few hours.

I'm hoping we see the old, rational, putin. The baltics would mean conflict with NATO. That would, at the very least, mean conventional war across a broad frontier.

Jeez, this is taking me right back to my childhood fears of nuclear war.

I've read several pieces suggesting this ends at Kiev because the West of the country is ethnically less Russian and geographically harder to hold. If his plan is to absorb Russian Ukraine the Baltic states aren't at risk.

I remember watching the "what to do in the event of a nuclear attack" videos, scary stuff, although until a boot steps on NATO soil about nuclear war, and even then it's far from guaranteed.

At least this thread makes more sense than on some other forums.
