Apart from the baltics and Finland there isn't anything of strategic value in Europe that I can see. Next stop is head south and get cosy with the middle easterns.
Interesting article on UnHerd.com https://unherd.com/2022/02/putins-spiritual-destiny/

I've read several pieces suggesting this ends at Kiev because the West of the country is ethnically less Russian and geographically harder to hold. If his plan is to absorb Russian Ukraine the Baltic states aren't at risk.

I'm now starting to think this will start and end with Ukraine.

He will take Ukraine, the rest of the world will cut off Russia financially, not wholly, but as much as they can get away with and be seen to be doing. No-one will send troops, but maybe military and humanitarian aid.

That will be that. I don't think he will go all Hitler and start invading other countries.

I think this is the first time in my life I'm genuinely concerned about Nuclear weapons. I'm 50 and the possibility is actually there, maybe distant. But not something that can be ruled out.

These are definitely worrying times.

Just know, before we all die, that I'm very thankful for the bonsai tree you sent me in 2009 for secret santa.

I think the fans of the EU and NATO are about to see how weak and fragmented the union actually is when under pressure, and how leviathan bodies like it can never make snappy decisions, unlike Mr. Putin. He must have been wetting himself watching the West dissolve into pathetic bickering over things as irrelevant to our long term security as politically correct speech, women and homosexuals drafted into the armed forces "for inclusiveness" , and our rampant consumerism from China whilst we were selling off of our means to self sufficiency.

We are in the midst of seeing what a powerful nation can do, unfettered by her being dragged back by liberal wets who have left us wanting, industrially, militarily and psychologically. What he must have thought as he saw us unable to even stop an invasion by thousands of unarmed illegal immigrants in rubber dinghies I am embarrassed to even contemplate. How he must have smiled as the Greens left Germany dependent upon him for the vast majority of her energy needs. How he must have chuckled over the media storm about a birthday party in Downing Street, whilst he built up an invasion force under the West's very noses.
He didn't just watch, he encouraged it. Mainly by using his troll farms to whip up culture wars and xenophobia and spreading propaganda that weakens the EU and NATO. That's why they are weaker than they should be, because too many people fell for it. Look at which party is swimming in a huge amount of Russian money, clue: it's not the Greens or the left wing parties, at least not in the UK.

If the Greens in Germany think that a fossil fuel in natural gas is preferable to nuclear then they are unworthy of the name.

If the rest of the world doesn't include China, then I don't think Putin's reign ends.

Its how capitalism works you don't pick and choose who can invest unless they are guilty of some atrocity which now Russia has chosen to move towards so it is NOW right that sanctions be further applied.

Your "morals" are an absolute joke.

And it's not how fundamentally "capitalism works" at all. It's just that we allow capitalism to work like that at the moment because it suits. Or did.

What is fundamental to capitalism is choice. You have chosen to support the Russians recently, whereas I and many others pointed out that making those choices would have these sort of consequences.

I also think (hope) this is the case

Which only accounts for 19% of their total energy sources, just for context.
Some people think this crisis means we should become more dependent on fossil fuels when in fact it means the opposite. If they hadn't been such climate crisis deniers we'd have got there much faster and be in a much better position right now.

It 100% wont happen, Putin will do what he want to do in Ukraine and spend the rest of his natural life going on about imagined war crimes that he will no doubt send many Ukraine MP`s to jail for life in vile prisons where they force you to stand up and stay still all day. They make our jails look like a holiday camp.

What are the rest for context, I thought they'd shut all their nuclear power stations
  • Nuclear: 60.9 TW⋅h (12.6%)
  • Brown coal: 81.94 TW⋅h (16.9%) 55% of which is 9.295%
  • Hard coal: 35.56 TW⋅h (7.4%) 55% is 4.07%
  • Natural gas: 59.08 TW⋅h (12.2%) 6.1%
  • Wind: 131.69 TW⋅h (27.2%)
  • Solar: 50.7 TW⋅h (10.5%)
  • Biomass: 45.45 TW⋅h (9.4%)
  • Hydro: 18.27 TW⋅h (3.8%)
From what I can find.

Absolutely, solar, nuclear, wind etc. should all be pushed vs. fossil fuels.
