One "winning" condition is to have huge land area (e.g. USA, Russia and China) to survive both waves and then re-bootstrap civilisation from underground facilities.

Nah,

In a full scale nuclear exchange - 6-12 months afterwards, the northern hemisphere would be freezing in summer (particulate matter in the atmopshere blocking the sun), no crops would grow, all water would be toxic - basically the whole of civilisation fails, more or less, there is no winner.

They need to join OcUK.

Indeed :p

Does show how incredibly powerful instant reporting via social media is and also how important it is to take down communication networks if you plan to break a countries morale. Bet China won't make the same mistake when they eventually decide to take Taiwan, although hopefully the global unity being shown against Russia will make them think twice.

I thought this has been proven to be false by the scientists?

How funny would it be if Russia's invasion is so pathetically lacklustre because they spent all their money on the shock and awe performance they put on in Syria and had nothing modern/decent left for Ukraine but just tried to bluff them into early surrender and failed :D

That requires absolutely massive yields which reach the stratosphere, the vast majority of current active warheads are nowhere near powerful enough.

Probably eyeing up the Chino-russian disputed regions + a little more. However for the same nuclear reasons as the EU they're not pushing troops - they can make more money from enabling trade and buying up Russian companies.

Do you think the deterrence from mutual assured destruction is sufficient to hold him off from pulling the trigger?

I read a theory that "total annihilation of civilisation" is a lie to those countries without warheads. Indeed there can be a "winner" out of a nuclear war (based on the fact that even if all existing warheads are detonated it can't cover all lands suitable for living). One "winning" condition is to have huge land area (e.g. USA, Russia and China) to survive both waves of strikes and then re-bootstrap civilisation from underground facilities. The UK and France may be wiped out beyond repair (full radiation coverage).

A large enough nuclear war will destory the climate. I wouldnt call, having a baron bit of rock on Russia for a few survivors to live on "winning".
