Nice so endless escalation has begun. I'd normally say cooler heads will prevail but they clearly did not this time. I have a very grim outlook for the European future.

Don't see why we can't discuss refugees. The UK does have a population/housing crisis and mass immigration is not good. Plenty of other places in the world with more space so I don't see why we should be expected to suddenly welcome millions more. It needs to be a combined and realistic global response.

And yeah, I also find the people quoting acronyms and weapon code names complete cringe, like we all know what they mean. The vast majority here don't. Just say "machine gun thingy" and "super big bomb level 10". That kind of talk mmkay?

Oligarchs own loads of property in the UK. Seize it and house them in those, something quite poetic about it as well.

Its been coming for a while since Putin went into back Lukashenko after his "re-election" - I am worried that Putin might try and use tactical nukes in Ukraine; maybe even try and blame the Ukrainians

Not sure that is the game plan here. Otherwise, why would they have not already obliterated large civilian areas with conventional weapons?

For the rightful and deserved criticism Boris has got over the last 6 weeks (Partygate etc) he is showing some genuine leadership and is by far and away the biggest voice in west at this time. I mean we haven't heard a word out of Biden in over 2 days now, go to the US page on the BBC and it's all about court appointments......

Its pretty clear in these first few days that Russia has massively underestimated the Ukrainian Military and people, I suspect that as more Russian forces (presumably the actual professional soliders, not conscripts) that they might start to overrun more cities and towns; but if they don't then I expect we will start to see larger strikes on civilian areas as he gets most desperate.

Is the joining the EU stuff a bid to boost morale or something as there is sod all chance of them joining any time soon.

Thought I'd watch a bit of RT for a laugh. God the presenters look exhausted, must be struggling to sleep with all those lies on their conscience :p

Personally I think the UK figure who deserves most credit is Defence Secretary Ben Wallace; he's led the way on delivering the military aid that Ukraine needs and got on with the job while others have swanned around getting photo opportunities.
Biden has been quiet over the weekend but what else do we expect him to say? In Europe the two EU leaders seem to have been thrown into the leadership role (van Leyden and Josep Borell) - co-ordinating and updating in place of the 27x national leaders; but that does seem to be speeding things up now with those nations.

The nuke stuff felt like a bit of a joke only a couple of days ago.
But more and more people who seem to have met putin first hand weighing in with him being

"not in his right mind" or at least "not the putin of 10 years ago"

Of all the things this is the most concerning by far.

None of this war makes sense apart from satisfying an ego. Which kind of throws out the window any of the normal "that would be insane" arguments.

Tomorrow is probably the most important day for the world in a long long time.
Every day the nuke threat seems to rise just a bit.

Maybe he really is ill. Maybe this actually is his last chance to do something. He is 70.
Someone with nothing to lose and him losing is incredibly scary.

Wallace has been clear eyed on this all the way through to be fair - I don't think he has been wrong once with his analysis of the driving forces involved.

This will probably wind Putin up no end, he loves this sport very much

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been suspended from his role as honorary president and ambassador of the International Judo Federation (IJF).

He's just trying to freak us out.

I don't really worry about nukes as there is nothing I can do about it. At least with covid you could take measures to protect yourself but sod all you can do about a nuclear missle.

Plus people grew up with the threat of nuclear war for decades but hey we're still here.

Did Putin just simply miscalculate massively here?

I get the impression that A. He wasn't expecting Ukraine to put up such a fight , and B. He wasn't expecting almost the whole of the rest of the world to unite against him sanctions wise.

I think he was expecting them to capitulate after a few days and he was probably expecting NATO country's to resort to petty bickering and weak sanctions, look how weak and petty we looked leading up to this war, we were bending over backwards trying to appease Putin, history has shown this is the worst possible thing to do and we was all in disagreement arguing what to do Germany, in particular was sabotaging attempts to help Ukraine again showing weakness.
