Ultima Mobile - 15.4" WSXGA Laptop

Ahh an XPS

Yes I'd seen them a while back but discounted them due to the preference of the other 2 competitors models. A few of my thoughts below

1) I don't think the XPS is the new Centrino 2 platform, so lower FSB and reduced performance. That was the case when I last saw it anyway.
2) Processor doesn't run at the lower power consumption associated with the P9500 (affects battery life)
3) XPS is DDR2 rather than DDR3 Ram
4) Would want something that approaches the performance of my desktop 8800GT to make it smoother / less annoying swapping between desktop and laptop.

So still happy with the OcUK one, it's more suited to my needs.

Just need to work out finances over the weekend.

1) The XPS does not use the Centrino 2 platform so you'd be buying old technology straight away. They're a good price for what they are but they are nothing like in terms of speed.
2) Correct - The P9500 is a much better chip for battery life.
3) Yup :)
4) The 9800M will be fine for this.

Also I must say the finish on our laptops is spot on, also if you're so inclined our laptops have nothing in them to hamper you upgrading them. Easy as anything to upgrade the wireless or CPU in the future.

Just a bit better than a fully enclosed unit you sometimes get.

The only catch that I have come across is that OCUK do not offer a 'Perfect-Pixel' warranty. This means some laptop screens come with a dead / stuck pixel (like mine did :()

Just how many dead pixels are they allowed before you can get it changed? Also what would the cost of getting a new screen for it be should it develop quite a few in the future?

I'm very tempted to place my order right now but this issue is really making me think twice

I only got 1, and it's a stuck pixel. Which means it can be fixed using software or th rubbing method.

Different companies have different levels of acceptance for dead pixels I'm afraid. The price of a new screen would be a about £150+, going by how much they go for on the bay.

I wouldn't let it bother you. Like I said, I only have one, and it isn't that bad, only when watching movies, and you really have to be looking at it.

Hello all,

New here and interested in the 15.4" Ultima laptop and have some questions as well:

1. How long does the battery last on these? any rough figures?
2. I'm a bit concerned about 'dead pixels' having read about them on here. How common are they? I have a 7 yr old Inspiron on which I've never noticed any.. how common are they on the OC Ultima laptop?
3. What's the warranty like on these?
4. Would you recommend Vista 64 bit over 32 bit?

Cheers.

1. I get about 2 Hours on mine. That's with half brightness, WIFI on, and a few apps running in the background (MSN etc).
2. TBH, dead pixels aren't that common. Stuck pixels are more common, and can be fixed, if you have the patience. I see that a member on these forums received an Ultima Mobile with a perfect screen. Maybe ask OcUK nicely to check the screen before sending it out?
3. The warranty is a 2 year warranty, with 6 months on the battery. To me, this seems fair.
4. I have recently switched over the 64-bit Vista Business, with hardly any headaches. Most programs can be found in 64-bit flavours, and most 32-bit programs will run without a hitch anyways. (32-bit Programs go in the 'Program Files (x86)' folder).

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

One more question from me, an easy one though.....

If I were to order with Vista 64, do I get the Vista installation disc? And if so is service pack 1 automatically part of the build?

Thanks

Mike

If you order the laptop with Vista, you should have the OS pre-installed, as well as the disk.
I'm not sure about SP1 though, as it doesn't say on the list that it comes with SP1 (then again, why wouldn't it?)

Yes, it does have a modem. It is a Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem. It can be located on the right hand side, directly next to the Ethernet port.

I have seen an XPS 1530, and although it has a fantastic screen, it is nothing compared to the Ultima's. However, I haven't seen one of those LED backlit XPS's yet.

Some further questions:

I want the laptop be as 'future proof' as is possible. Therefore, I was considering getting the blueray writer.. any thoughts on this?

Secondly, will the chancellors reduction in vat be applied to your items?

Thanks.

I, personally, didn't need the Blu-Ray Writer as I don't burn that many films or data for storage. I guess the choice whether to buy it or not, would be up to you.

I'm not too sure about the VAT reductions, you will have to contact OcUK directly (webnote) or wait until someone from OcUK sees this thread.
