Ultima Mobile - 15.4" WSXGA Laptop

Hmmm...I've just checked your build and the components are definitely correct. I'll be interested to see this tomorrow. Have you got the correct CPU?

Hi

Thanks.

The CPU is correct as noted in the Vista system screen and CPU-Z.

The RAM however is being reported as 2Gb in the Vista system screen and 2Gb DDR2 in CPU-Z. Vista has SP1 installed and is fully updated but still reports 2Gb RAM.

I believe the hard drive is a 5400rpm item from some paperwork that came with the system but I do not want to take off any panels to verify myself.

Guess we'll see tomorrow, should I ask for you personally?

Thanks for your help

Mike

unfortunately Im at work so do not have the list to hand. Can post later though or just bring tomorrow. From memory though this list appeared to be the builders tick sheet. It specified 2x 2Gb ram but unfortunately it only states a 5400rpm drive which is different to what was requested.

Hi

Just home now. Checked device manager and the hard drive is shown as a WD3200BEKT (320Gb 7200rpm) so that's good news :) The tick list shows a Fujitsu 5400rpm item so luckily I think your builders have gone off my order rather than the tick list or something.

The RAM however is still a problem. The tick list shows part MY-124-OC (2x 2Gb DDR3) but CPU-Z recognises it as a single stick of 2Gb DDR2 :(

Will see you tomorrow hopefully, thanks for your help online.

I'm fairly sure that it's a problem in CPU-Z as mine does the same thing.
Also, it may be useful to know that DDR2 RAM cannot be used in DDR3 slots, so I've heard.

Hopefully that applies to my case.

How does your RAM show up in Vista system info? I've just checked the system tab of 3DMark 06 and this reports it as 2Gb also :( Maybe 4Gb is installed but one of the sticks is dodgy / dislodged??

Will see tomorrow

Anyone know how to istall XP Pro from scratch... i get the blue screen error message :-

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try chaging video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical error is **** STOP: 0x0000007e (0x0000005,0xf748e0bf,0xd78da208,0xf78d9f08)

looking at the bottom of my laptop Ive noticed that it seems all the vents on the underside are covered over. I popped the cover off to have a look, and the vents all look to have a sheet of black plastic covering them. Is this how it should be? even where the fan is ( under the round vent) it is covered over with black plastic.

When running games CoreTemp reads upto 83degrees peak which seems quite toasty... but then there is some serious processing power in this laptop with the most powerful CPU available in it so i dont expect it to run cool :-)

Has anyone who owns this system run 3DMark 06 yet? I was wondering what score you got and what score you would anticipate my spec below to get

Vista 64
9800M GTS on stock drivers
2GB DDR2 RAM (due to be uplifted to 4Gb DDR3 see above :))
7200rpm HDD
P9500 2.53GHz processor

And would my score increase significantly with 4Gb of RAM instead of 2Gb?

Thanks

Hi Mike, I have the same spec as you (with 4GB DDR3), but cannot get 3DMark 06 to work at all. It keeps complaining that it cannot find OpenAL32.dll, but it's there alright. Done some googling, and still can't find a working fix for it.
Oh well, it's not a very useful tool for gamers anyway, as it can't really relate to 'real-world' performance.

Hello

I can fix openal32 problem for you from memory hopefully.

First of all download the openal32 exe file (oalinst.exe)
Find openal32.dll in C:\windows\system32
CUT (not copy) and paste it into your 3dmark directory
Reinstall openal32 from the exe you downloaded
hey presto it should work

Please let me know if you get it to work and what score you get.

I know it doesn't really directly translate to gaming performance but just need to put my mind at ease that the system is running fine compared to others.

I've actually got a score already but I think it's a little low :(

Sounds like the right specification in that case. It may just be that the tick sheet was stuck on the wrong box but our systems have measures in place to stop wrong components being put in builds. The laptops will not take DDR2 so sounds like the software reporting incorrectly.

Turn the laptop on and keep tapping the F2 key to get into the BIOS. There is an option to select whether you are installing XP or Vista. They are set at default as Vista but if you install XP without changing the setting you do get a BSOD.

Thanks Slackworth, hopefully that is the case. I'm worried that it is being reported as 2Gb in three different locations though but guess we'll confirm it tomorrow.

And Davey D, thanks, now I'm worried about my GPU, not getting anywhere near 9000 :( Have you done any significant tweaking to get that? I've run my test on high performance power plan and plugged into the mains but not getting a great result unfortunately.

i havent done any tweaking.. ive used all the drivers that came on the supplied CD, except for the graphics ive used the latest Nvidia desktop drivers with a modified .inf file so they would install :)

on the other thread someone else with the same spec as me got a little over 9000, but he was using windows XP sp3

Hi. Does that mean it's not possible to dual-boot with XP/Vista?

Just keep it in Xp mode, and it should be fine for both.. the main difference is that with Vista mode you get the choice of running your drive in AHCI mode

Hi

My laptop was dropped off this morning. The RAM issue was simply down to one of the sticks had come loose from it's clips. 4Gb is now being reported so thats good news.

There is an issue with the GPU though which is being looked at at the moment. Getting random shut-downs when the GPU is on load and low 3DMark scores. Hope it's nothing serious.

Shadows1990, did you manage to get 3DMark up and running and have a score?

Thanks

Mike

Just finished running 3D Mark 06 and got a score of 9108 :)

Spec:

T9400
4Gb Ram
320Gb 7200 HD
Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP1
Nvidia drivers 176.25 (quite old but latest for download from Clevo website)

If you are experiencing a low score, made sure laptop is plugged into the mains and you have the 'High Performance' power profile selected otherwise stuff will be downclocked.
