Ultima Online - Europa ....anyone still there?

tho i am rocking a set of valorite armor :D with some neon fire boots xD and my halberd with some crazy stats... which are probably rubbish now :(

Eugh, I hated when they added all the neon ****. Made the game look like a 90s illegal rave XD (Although the fire steed did look awesome)

Had me a nice set of valorite plate, with a vet reward gold cloak and a valorite halberd, riding on a nightmare and a white wyrm on tow ;)

yea, all the funky colours did offend the eyes slightly xD mmmm val plate :D when i logged in i have a vet reward to choose... dunno what to get tho :p

also completely forgot that to repair your stuff you actually need a blacksmith to do it for you!!!!! the days of trust, going the the blacksmith south of the brit GY, putting all my stuff in a bag and handing it over with 1000g or what ever the rate was for them to fix it and give it back :) ahhh the trust we had back then.

and the gamblers with dice, handing over vast amounts of monies!!! 1-6 low, 8-12 high, 7 triple xD

If you're after a quick bit of UO nostalgia there is an Android app with all the midi tunes. Search the store for "UO Ultima Online Soundboard", or just "Ultima Online". Some of those midi tunes were fantastic, I still regularly listen to them on my PC.

The game was just more than a game to most. It was an almost living, breathing world with an incredible community that I have yet to see equalled in ANY mmo. It is a shame it never evolved away from the 2D client - the players are to blame for that though. The 'hardcore' addicts who refused to give anything '3D' a chance more or less sabotaged UO's progress forward and the game's state is due to those fools really. The 3D client was never really accepted as the 2D diehards never gave it a single chance to flourish.

UOX: Oddssey was a chance for UO to move forward but just as the project was progressing nicely with Callandryll (of the uo.com boards) at the helm, EA decided to shift OSI's offices (in Texas) to their San Francisco HQ. Not everyone wanted to move to SF and UOX died in less than a week.

i'm one of those who didn't really want to see it turn full 3d. the game would be a completely different play style :p but the 3d client they did make was kinda laughable.... everything just looked pointy xD think FFVI/VII

would have been interesting to see what would have been though. i remember there was some random guy/studio working on a basic 3d render of UO as it was.... that was going back yearssssssss so i doubt anything came of that :\

I agree it wouldn't have been the same as a full 3D fp/tp viewpoint, e.g. WoW/EQ, etc - the isometric style worked amazingly well, and the game was no less immersive for it. I didn't think the 3D client was that bad actually, took some getting used to after the 2D, but I think I preferred it. There was also the newer 3D client wasn't there? Kingdoms Reborn or something.

Never heard of Ultima Online, although it looks like The Legend of Mir Style which i played a hell of a lot! The only MMORPG iv actually missed and would die to go back.

Even I have and I don't play MMO's

Kingdom Reborn was just the 3D client finally 'finished'. It was the failure I speak of and was later replaced by the 'Enhanced' client, which had a sort of moddable UI and more features.

Yes moving to 3D would have killed the 'tile' based 2D UO as we knew it but it was hugely clear that UO had to move away from 2D or die. The latter eventually happened over a number of years. UO is now kept alive by those who log in once a week to refresh their homes to stop them from decaying I guess. I am so surprised that EA haven't killed the thing off.

This should take you guys down memory lane. It is the best goodbye to UO I've ever seen. Had it bookmarked for years :)

I remember back in the early days, before even Europa was even a server. I played on Catskills as I thought it had a cool name. All the towns were busy, the whole world felt alive and vibrant... The community had its far share of beggars, thieves, con-men, PKers, exploiters, griefers, but they still seemed to have class. Maybe its just Rose tinted specs and all but massive online gaming was new and a thing of genuine excitement and wonder.

I know what you mean about having class - UO had a great community spirit (or at least seemed to), where people were far less "1337" and much friendlier, maybe because it was so exclusive and the people playing were real enthusiasts. You could just hook up with a bunch of randoms and actually end up helping each other out, these days with the average WoW player, you'd be more likely to get told to **** off and have your mother insulted! :(

so anyone fancy playing/making a new character? i still got a few on europa but looks like atlantic is the closest/fullest server going... would mind making a new adventurer for the fun of it. maybe a tamer, always good for a laugh hehe :)

if anyone is up for it let me know, can prob use voice comms and just storm about the place followed by little critters :p

played uo for about 8 years and lvoed every minute of it. sadly the server i was on got a lot of hacks and ended up being offline, lost their playerbase then sadly died completely :(

tried other shards but not thwe same in terms of pvp scripts and so forth

lamer tamer xD haha!!!! i remember seeing peple before and thinking... oh they just got off their horse.... this should be easy......**** IT'S NOT A HORSE!!! AHHHHHH damm nightmares!!!

damm dark horses firing lazers our their asses hehe xD

Yup, I played on Catskills for my entire UO time too, my character was Kith Kanan, was leader of the player run town of Kinship Village (on the mainland opposite Skara Brae) for quite a while.

Yeah Kinship Village was quite well known on Catskills, consisted of about 40 or 50 buildings laid out in a town formation, with a player run tavern, staffed 24 hours a day by players, the town had a council and its population consisted of dozens of "clans" or "houses", each house/clan with an elder (called a "Ri") upon the council and the council had an overall elected by vote leader (like a mayor if you like, called an "Ard'Ri"). The town was "blessed" with many unique structures and items by the GMs running the game and held loads of events. Population of the town at its peak was upwards of 1000 people living within the town limits within one clan or another.

Walk up to the bank (avoiding the thieves who hang around there), type "bank" as quickly as possible and deposit all items of value/gold :D

Those were the days.

lol, that reminds me of when I first encountered my first Silver Serpent in the new T2A lands outside Papua.

Me: "ooh a white slimey snaaaaake, no problem for me and my sword of might! Have at thee nasty..."
Snake: <bite>
Me: "erp?!" <you are wracked with extreme pain> "oOOoOoo"

Speaking of lamer tamers. My tamer on Euro has a pre-uo:r 7xGM White Wyrm, one of the oldest on the shard. Imagine my surprise to see that she and all my pets were still in the stables when I recently went on :)

Ah so many great memories of UO; some which stick out:

Orc Mages - the gits. Bane to new players everywhere "looks like a normal orc, how bad can it be..." oOoOoo oOoo Ooo.

Getting my first horse: I felt like a king that day, until it died shortly after to an orc/troll/ogre party - oh 56k modem how I loved your random 10 second long lag spikes of doom!

Taming a PB Nightmare in Hell Trammel - that was interesting to say the least, especially with a guy trying to drag the whole spawn onto you - GM magery and Vet ftw. :)

The road to Britannia: the first few journeys from Minoc to Britannia, ah those were the days. Trying to survive with my crap magic skills and 0 resist.

Plate armour: Getting a GM smith to make a full shadow coloured plate armour set - I felt pretty cool in that for the 5 minutes to notice it reduces your dex to nothing. :)

The Trammel 'Bone wall' - great for GM'ing combat skills but some of the conversations that went on there were mind numbing. Although, when a guy offered to open a gate to town for someone and instead it was to the poisoned mushroom field in the same dungeon, that was quite amusing - not so much for them though lol.

Order Vs Chaos pvp: good fun - as was us all creating characters with the same name, 'Chucky', complete with matching jester outfits on and totally confusing people in pvp.

Placing my log cabin and later a tower with a mate and building in a bar/pvp area on the roof. :)

Although the game was quite simple in many respects the freedom and flavour it had was great and so much of the content was player driven, so some of the simple mechanics could be forgiven. Housing added a lot of depth, even though it did mess the map up a lot.

I think half the danger back in the day with UO (for me at least) was battling with a dial up connection rather than the mobs being that bad, the lag was the killer and trying to run back to your bones before they were ransacked or decayed. :)

Getting cable was magic: "I can run full speed on a horse with no stutter - I've finally made it!". (actually being able to pvp properly for once). :D

Good point on the music, it was excellent, with Vesper being one of my favourites. I think I still have the original game box somewhere - time to get those original music files onto the PC! :)
