Unbearable pain

The last time i had an oral abscess it was total agony and i ended up doing a bit of self surgery using a scapel and a hypodermic needle for insulin to actually get deep into it, it was close enough to the surface that it ruptured and i ended up with a mouthful of foul white rancid puss.

Lots of listerine helped numb it after that and it has never re occurred, but its not something i would really recommend but the pain was that bad i couldn't wait for a dentist.

Definitely not offering medical advice, just offering my own experience.

It's quite common to get "gum flaps" over the wisdom teeth - the wife has a mild case and they're always bugging her to get them pulled to stop what's happening to you by the sound of it - food stuffs get under the gum, go rotten and you get an infection.

I had really bad teeth until 3 years ago when I was fed up with the pain and decided to finally get it all fixed. It cost a fortune, but my god it was worth it. I went to a dentist who specialized in sedation and they gave me some wonderful pills. I was in the chair for 7 hours and had 3 root canals, 2 extractions and a serious clean....I just sat there in complete drug induced bliss :D I happily went back for another 3 hour session for 1 more root canal and some fillings. The drugs are SO good.....now I look forward to the dentist.

The wife also finds it highly amusing to watch me doing strange things when I get back home before the drugs have worn off - last time I said I was going to the bathroom and then tried to climb out of a closed window.....she came in and found me all tangled in the blinds :o

What drugs do they give you in the Dentist in the USA ?
I remember the laughing gas as a kid when visiting the Dentist, that was great that floating feeling.

Strangely my arse always hurt afterwards ! go figure ! :p

USA get all sorts of awesome twilight sleep drugs like propofol we just get rubbish usually unless you get a referal to get a General at hospital like I am due to get.

Had about 3hrs sleep last night third night in a row, woke up in the morning couldn't talk, face swollen and sore to swollow. Went to A&E and they looked at my teeth as from on top they are all good, but i have an abcess that's gone into my jaw line. On some powerful medication and put through to emergency dental line.

Lovely start to 2011 :(

Sounds more like a Wisdom tooth coming through than an abscess to me.

This is very liekly what it is.

Get oxygen into the area, it'll be sore to do, but brush the living ^%&^ out of it. It'll open up the flap, and help get oxygen under the gumline which affects the conditions the bacteria causing the pain live in.

They basically live without oxygen, and love nasty little crevaces between erupting tooth and immature gum.

Brush it, mouthwash it, and as long as you've no allergies an antibiotic such as metronidazole will sort that pain out in a short space of time.
Its a prescription only medicine (as all antibiotics are) but an on-call doctor will be able to give you it.
It is specifically what you need.

I suffered an abscess for a week before I got to the dentist, he gave me a root canal, I clearly remember the feeling as the abscess burst, the foul taste of the liquid and the massive release of pressure. I hadn't slept all week with the pain but slept for the rest of the session in the dentist.

Neil79, go to the hospital, hopefully they will be able to give you painkillers. At the earliest opportunity try clove oil. I'm really sorry to hear your in pain fella. Probably much worse than what I experienced but I had a wisdom tooth come through about four years ago, was quite bad. Thankfully painkillers kept it at bay.

Ahh realise you have gone, beginning to think I need glasses, really hope the painkillers make it bearable for you.

I had the same thing two years ago (2009!), just before christmas. I didn't want to ruin anyones christmas so I didn't say anything, until I passed out on christmas eve :(

Went to some emergency private dentist, cost a fortune. the relief after just a few seconds of the pressure being released was amazing

as others have said, normal painkillers don't really take the edge off with dental pain. I used some migraine tablets as they have codeine (sp) in them which was the most effective. other than that whiskey as a mouth wash does work to some extend and it numbs the gums and is tasty :)

Good luck mate, feel for you

I had an old milk tooth removed at 23 and it crumbled when the dentist pulled it. The pain where he dug it out of my jaw had me rolling around on the floor. Luckely i was a student at the time so a little herbal medication made the time pass very quickly.

Allways dislike reading threads like this...i got a tooth in roof of my mouth just like my dad he had a abcess due to it and had to have a op which involved cutting the top of your mouth behind the teeth and peeling it back :x then stictching it back together through your teeth

Did you type that with your teeth?

I feel like a drug addict, so many pills . Went back to bed as the pain eased off, now i have a headache from a messed up sleep pattern!.

Awesome :o

Thanks for all the advice everyone though, glad to know it's not just me that has experienced it :p

A member of the family kept on telling me it looked like i had an impacted tooth because she had one. I decided to phone dentaline and get it checked by a proper dentist, sure enough they told me Impacted Tooth and some food is getting stuck under the swollen cheek's. Had another very painful night and my headache wont go away, all these meds and nothing so far is working.
