dotn take a tv, pc, hifi and consoles, just take your pc and buy a tv card if need be, but how often will you watch it even then?

I use/used all of my stuff I took, and I went out loads too, so my answer to that is...lots.

Over the top fancy dress for freshers week.

Week? I had a fortnight.

Good call, I'm going on my placement and it's my first year away from home!

Iron
Bog Roll
Detergent for washing clothes
All your chargers for gadgets/phone(s)/other electrical goodies
Surge protector for your goods
Rubber gloves for kinky nights and cleaning the loo?
Bubble wrap for packing precious stuff
Hangers for wardrobe
Stationary
Personal hygiene related stuff
Alarm Clock (if you use your phone, you NEED a backup)

Any more?

How are you going to survive going away to Uni. if you can't even sort the basics out on your own?
Don't be silly. There a number of things people forget/don't include in their list.

Edit: Excellent link Inquisitor

But that usually won't be enough if you've got an "enthusiast" level PC or similar. Don't skimp on the small print, see what you're covered for. Endsleigh are excellent student insurers.

Depends. Mine covered up to £1000 I think, which should be enough unless you have some really high end stuff. It can be extended, though I'm not sure what the premiums are like.

contents insurance in my first year was covered by halls but you'll want to check your contract etc. If not I think it only cost me £27 for a years cover for the house this year.

+ spare duvet if its cold or your window breaks open :(

+ a rug is nice to have under the desk and a bath mat as floors need mopping and carpet in halls is pretty cold and thin on the concrete floor below.

+ loud alarm clock

+ DVDs

Eh i got an offer from Birmingham, it's such a nice campus, the department was pretty naff for Chemistry though.

Tux and suit.
Lots of underwear.

I'm taking my laptop to uni with me... but it's a craptop... so if it doesn't suffice I'll be building a PC in the first holidays ;)

- School shirt and tie
- DVDs
- PS3/Xbox/Wii (great for breaking the ice with new people and generally lazzing on when you inevitably run out of money near the end of term)
- Toiletries
- Clothes
- Bed stuff
- Sleeping bag for when mates come to visit
- Forget the Hi-Fi, just get some good speakers for your pc and use them instead - you won't have a lot of room in your room.
- Chargers
- Surge protector
- alarm clock
- Shot glasses/pint glasses (although you can just steal these from bars/pubs, it's a bit of a pain)
- Cool posters
- PC/laptop
- A clothes hanger thing is also useful
