uni thread (what to take?)

Laptops - can use them on the train, in the library, outside on the grass, but they're VERY easy to steal! You pop to the kitchen for 10" leaving your room unlocked - poof, it's gone! You're in the library and need the toilet and don't bother to take it with you - whoosh! Invest in one of those padlocks and use it everywhere. You think "oh, I'll be careful, I'll use my brain, I won't give any thief the opportunity to take it, but at one point you WILL get complacent even if just for a second!

Never had my laptop nicked, used to leave it in the library when off to the loo all the time. The amount of time it'd take to pack everything away etc is too long for the casual theif and the library is so busy that people would notice somebody swiping a laptop yet leaving all the cables behind.

Ultimate student guide (well my guide...)

You want to take food which wont go out-of-date so easy..

Tin Food + Vegtables/Fruit (life saver and keep you mildly healthy)
Pasta boring but does the job and dont forget the pasta sauce
When you go shoping with your parents buy has much good food has possible, cause when you are on your own you will soon realise that you cannot afford to buy that good food any long and find yourself looking at Sainsburys/Tescos/Asda basics...

Beer/Vodka/Rum whatever your poison is, take it or buy it... dont wanna encourage binge drinking but I practice it instead being a student and all, and trust me you can make friends a lot easier by saying the simple words "Would you like a drink?" go ALCOHOL!

Condoms... dont do what I did in my second year and buy them from a pound shop either, yes I got condoms from a pound shop and yes 2 out of 3 ripped and there were 16 of them... I found myself waiting with a certain young lady in the family planning clinic a few hours later

Glasses, being in a house which has constant parties every week, we found we run out of glasses quite regularly and the mugs just dont seem to cut it! When you consider is the cup half empty or half full, quite frankly the cup is just to damn small - when you go to the pub, you pay for the beer, and the glass - so just steal the glass - your thank me later :D

Pens dont bother taking pens and pencils to University... you can just steal about 20302138213 million of them during a freshers fair plus some other random stuff that will be on offer, such has rubber ducks, posters, badges, rubbers, condoms, and lube.

USB STICK!!

Dont go to University shy, you wanna be loud and proud - no one is going to no who you are and no body will probably care that much so its a fresh start for you!

I repeat this twice - do not give your toilet roll to girls if you do this you will never see your toilet roll again and if you do it will have decreased in use after just one trip to the toilet.. sorry girls but it happens a lot and I never realised how much girls use until living with 4 of them!

Paracetamol - you will not use this has often has you think, but when you do need it and use it, you will thank god that it is there for you - this also goes for beechams flu+cough+headache powder - life savers!

Lucozade / Ribena these are the best hangover cures I have been able to find - apart from a bacon sandwich

- Plug extentions, chargers, re-usable batteries + charger etc etc

- Speakers, big ass ones if possible and a amp if you have one - think of it has an extention to oneself, you will be the envy of your friends and let campus know what you listening to.

- sleeping bag + extra pillows + blanket

Some advice also...

Do not leave your door unlocked under any circumstances - people know this and can walk into your campus / dorm and you will not know whether they are a member of your uni, a rockstar, a random person off the street..
I will tell you a true story that happened at my University in Brighton - some random guy came off the street and walked into my friends halls they had only been living there a few weeks and a guy came in and said he was looking for Steve - and naturally everyone thinks they know a person called steve or they do?
They let him in and then it kinda clocked that they shouldnt let him walk around one of the campus dorm blocks which holds around 80 people.....

They found he had locked himself into one of there friends room and no one knew who he was so they started to kick down the door - they realised someone should go out the back before he jumped out the window but he was too late they chased after him but he had got away with someones laptop and legged it down the street!

Oh my actual god!

Are you joking me.. Seriously, use your imagination, what do you think youll need to live your life as you do now!

How the hell are you going to last at uni.

Get a grip.

muhahahaha :D

wtf is wrong with people?
Well, tbh i've got a bit of a headache atm, but apart from that i'm dandy.

you do know your stealing from someones pocket when you do that?
Really?! OMG...erm....what do i do? Just return them? Call the police and hand myself in? You have to help me Psycho Sonny.......OcUK, i'm scared, tell me what i need to do!

i have in fact stopped buying shot glasses now and got washable plastic ones instead and somebody has now stolen half of them

Consider it the cost of doing business. :)

i turned up for my first week (on the train, none of this "carful of tat" mucking around with a bagful of clothes, some pans and my wallet.

any man should be able to survive anywhere with his keys, his phone and his wallet. anything else is just sub-alpha fail.

Sure you didn't buy water balloons?

*snigger*

Pro-plus!

Pro-Plus is a must have. You will definately use it at least once when you have left coursework to the night before hand in. It takes a few mins to kick in but then I ended up running around the room hyper LOL :D. But got down to work and got a good mark; all down to pro-plus. It does make you wee a lot though

btw for birmingham it depends where you stay in your first year, some / most sites have full insurance included in your rent.

as for me i think ill get a cheap laptop for uni + bring my pc up if i feel like i need it.

otherwise im not really gonna take much apart from stuff like clothes / moneh :P

Holy crap, where to start? I'm in the same position as you but trying to make a list would just take far too long. I'll have a go at a general outline. Just think about the main things you need to live. Then the things you'll need to maintain those vital items.

Food - cups, pans, etc
Clothes - including an iron
Health - soap, shampoo, toilet roll, etc
Bedding
Laptop/Computer. I bought a MBP because when you need the library it can be difficult to get a PC. This way I can take it to the library and use that.
Entertainment (optional) - TV and console

You might want to think about homely things like a plant, a lamp, etc. Don't forget you can buy lots of the stuff at where ever your living instead of moving it all over in car loads.

i wouldnt say tv, unless you want to put one in the common area or have poeple in your room to watch it. you also need to buy a tv licence if its in your room, at my halls there was a debate if the communal area needed a one or if it was covered by the uni's license.
