United States Grand Prix 2012, Austin - Race 19/20

Was sat next to James Allison (Lotus Technical Director) on the plane journey over. Very interesting guy. Mentioned that a lot of the work at Lotus is focussed on the 2014 car rather than 2013.

I think this is the same for a lot of people as the minimal rule changes mean the 2013 cars will just be evolutions of this years cars.

Oh and git. :D

He was punting these about at arrivals - can anyone spot what's special about them? ;)

Other than the fact its a couple of race helmets, is there something else were missing?

Seems rather odd that there is only 1 of each, as drivers usually have at least 2. Maybe they are special paint jobs that have been done for this weekend?

Just seen on Twitter that for 2013 DRS in practice and quali is going to be limited to the DRS zones in the race.

Looks like quali times are going to be a lot slower next year then.

It really is time they scrapped DRS all together.

lol, everyone up to Kimi, done simulator, walked it, cycled it, watched video, etc, etc, looks great. Kimi... not been there yet, not seen it, will you walk it... maybe, wasn't entirely clear but I think he was saying if he can get a golf cart or something he might go around, cycling/walking being too much effort it felt like :p

Does anyone know if there is proper data for how many laps each of their engines has done? I know they seem to list when they use a new engine, but afaik they tend to mix it up and change engines around so is there any way to know who has what left. IE Did Mclaren's cars break down twice on engines doing a 2nd long race or even a third race, do Mclaren have only engines that have done 2 races left, or do they have the freshest engines left while Red Bull only have 2 quite heavily used engines left... that kinda thing.

You'd think it would be pretty well watched by people in the pits knowing if they are doing a race with an engine that has done 100+ laps or none, or whatever in between.

They surely do. Considering I saw a link the other day detailing the current engine situation for all teams, I imagine the actual teams have their own fairly detailed data on what everyone else has left.

About time! Can't have been the only one who though the 'use DRS anywhere you can/dare' in practice and qualifying was plain daft.

If its the chart that just lists 1 through 8(assuming the team has hit 8 engines) afaik it only lists when they used a new engine. But you could go engine 1 at the first race, engine 2 for the 2nd and 3rd, and reuse the first engine in the last race of the season, or anytime in between.

Overall it give little info on how "old" an engine is and what they have left. Mclaren used their 8th engine I think 4 races ago, starting after Singapore, but I think 2-3 other engines appear to have only been used once.

Found it again earlier, but, well I think its here http://www.vivaf1.com/reliability.php but its not working for me right now :(
