Replay on max - off track limits a couple of corners before as well as a brief cut at the point of overtake.

But other drivers not penalised for same kind of thing.

FIA hypocrisy?

I think they allow a bit of corner cutting generally, but ignoring track limits to overtake is a bit different. If the line off track is 0.05-0.1s faster is one thing, using that to execute an overtake that will block your opponents line and giving racing position is a massive benefit from leaving the track.

I think generally they need to be stronger at punishing repeated abuses of track limits anyway, soni agree with the penalty.

I think it was because Verstappen had all four wheels over the white line, and as that was what allowed him to squeeze past Kimi and gain a podium place, I don't think the stewards had much choice.

Coulthard talks about consistency and Jordan talks about leaving leeway to make the spectacle for the audience, but it was pretty clear cut, and you shouldn't have people being able to break the rules and get podiums just because they had a good run on the track.

I don't think it should have been penalised as it was marginal. Also great racing that should be encouraged. However, the argument that others have been going off track doesn't really count when compared to going off track to make an overtake. It wasnt blatant and not a significant advantage gained - just the sort of thing F1 should be avoiding if they want to attract new fans.

But would it have been fine for kimi to straightline the chicane to take a place back? The rules need to be clear or people will push the limits to the extreme.

Seems to be a case of no advantage gained (track position) no foul.

But cut the same corner for 5 laps and make a clean overtake - no problems.

Frustrated for max. Frustrated at the weird decisions by race control this season but fundamentally stewards have enforced accurately on max. Just a shame they dont do the same when it might affect 'the spectacle' of a championship lead.

Why do you thwart me? Im trying to clutch at straws here!! :p

New engines can be a risk.

Also I disagree with that max penalty. He would have overtaken without going off. The fia full of rubbish as usual. At least I can now see a time when the fia is reigned in - I now have faith in liberty media.

Hamilton could well match shumachers most wins in a season. Impressive stuff.

Agree that there needs to be consistency and definitely a tricky one - demonstrated by all the differing opinion. I'm even continuing to argue it both ways in my own head!

Probably more controversy the way it's played out than if the position had stood though...
