Campbell is on trial because Bennett did not see his petulant, if insignificant, retaliation in the Community Shield. On the basis of the punishment which Bennett dished out for Vieira’s similar but, from the ref’s point of view, more serious reaction, we now know that had he seen Campbell’s flick then the defender would probably have been given, at worst, a yellow card.
