Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

Just got my HIS 6950 :D

I've put it in my current rig, I won't flash it as my current cpu is holding the card back anyway. I'll flash it once I have my new computer sorted. And then i'll put up some benchmarks.

[EDIT]: Taken out the card now. I'll save it for my new rig. At least I know it works :)

May as well flash it with the 6950 bios with unlocked shaders. Just because you don't need it doesn't mean you turn something that is free down :).

Can someone with a HIS 6950 which has flashed with the HIS 6970 BIOS post idle and load temperatures before and after flash.

I have the HIS 6950 flashed to a 6970.

I didn't take temps before I flashed it but now it idles around 42C. Under load with a custom fan profile I made in MSI it hovers around 85C max in intensive graphical games and 75-80C in most others.

It was getting hotter before the custom profile as CCC doesn't ramp the fan speed up early enough. They do this to keep it quiet but would prefer lower temps myself. The custom profile fan doesn't exceed 45% which is still failry quiet imo.

Just an update on my cards. I have been running the 6970 bios on my crossfire 6950s. Everything I have run has been stable with the exception of BC2 but I am starting to think that game just doesnt like me. I flashed a modded 6950 bios earlier to see if it made any difference and it shaved a few degrees off. With the 6970 bios I am hitting 90 on the top card. On the modded bios its hanging around 85 so I think i may keep it. When I was swapping cards and flashing I noticed the label on the top card had bubbled a bit. Quite scary

@pieman109 What I did was go into the winflash folder and rename my backup.bin and then replace it with the modded bios I wanted to flash. Then just run flash_back_to_6950.bat ;)

EDIT: Just remembered I had a similar issue before when using my onboard sound. I had to take out my X-Fi sound card because of the pci slot now being covered :o

did you increase the voltage?

No I haven't changed any settings yet so its at 880/1375 clocks Furmark couldn't get it over 70C and just been playing Crysis for the last few hours and it doesn't go over 70C with the fan running at 30%. Idle is around 42-43C. No crashes, no artefacts. Its GREAT!

where are you getting these modded bios from plz ? i wouldnt mind trying one with higher fan speed options :)

well i successfully flashed a HIS using the batchfiles downloaded at techpower up

not sure what bios it used to be honest as i had a sapphire and a HIS one in the folder

ive ran furmark, heaven and 3dmark 11 without issue

idles at 38C and load at 78C

gunna fire up BC2 now and enjoy it :)

btw , this "PowerTune slider to the +20% setting" is it actually needed ?

no

Ok, so installed th HIS 6950 and flashed with the moddifed 6950 Bios. So it's currently running all shaders but clocked to standard 6950. Just played WoW (not graphic intensice I know) for a good couple of hours without and problems.

Time to download afterburner and clock it up a little.

For those who are interested, temps remain the same modded or not.

You mean the batch script? I'm not sure.

But i do know for a fact using atiwinflash will work, just follow the instructions in the OP of this thread and just use your modded.bin file instead.

Well I suck worse than easy when doing this sort of thing which is why I used the "noob" package form techpowerup, just one click and its done. I found the 6970 bios thats in atiwinflash called "unlock.bin" and thats the actual bios thats installed in the card when its flashed. I reckon that bios can be removed and replaced with your bios (the one that leaves the overclocks and Vram timings alone). I just need to identify which of the files in "your" techpowerup package is the actual bios so I can rename it and copy it to the atiwinflash software. I'm assuming, and please correct me if I've got this all wrong, I should be able to run the noob package and load the new transferred bios which repalced the original.

Yes aslong as you rename the bios to unlock.bin

I'm not sure any of the bios have increased fan speeds although I think you can edit them in RBE. I used MSI to set a custom fan profile on mine which is working really well.

Well I received my HIS 6950 today and I was dying to flash it asap. Used the HIS 6970 bios and it flashed no problem about 30mins ago. Used furmark and unigine benchmark and doesn't seem to be any issues with artifacts or anything so im quite happy :)

Fingers crossed I get no problems further down the line or in games etc but so far so good!

im just using CCC fan control (auto) atm and tbh it seems cool enough, 37c idle now and high 70's at load :)

You using stock or custom fan profile?

Seems strange and I get the impression mine is running hotter than average. This is in a well ventilated case too.
Card doesnt seem to shoot up and get hot just does so steadily, core hangs around 80C but gpuz was reading one of the temps at 90C at a point during a heaven run.

It is simple enough to limit things to 70 using msi afterburner though it can get a bit loud.
