Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

So is the 6950 with unlocked sharders the exact same card as 6970 when clocked to a 6970 ?

Yes, aside from the memory chips on the 6970 are rated to a higher speed (will overclock higher) and the 6950 core is 1.1v, whereas the 6970 core is 1.175v. Flashing a 6950 to a 6970 ups the voltage but the memory chips are what they are and cannot be changed.

It's luck of the draw with the memory. Some will accept the new timings and clock increase, others won't - sorry mg :(.

This is why I'm trying to mod a moddifed 6950 (all shaders) with 6970 core and mem freq and spin the fan a little more to bring the temps down a little - I know you can OC with afterburner.

This should keep the stock 6950 timings.

MG, created a new bios file if you want it.

who as a HIS 6950 flashed to a ASUS 6970 bios ?

i can't get ASUS Smartdoctor to work using the ASUS 6970 bios but it works using the ASUS 6950 bios unlocked SP's

anyone else had the same problem?

I cant get either of my HIS 6950's to flash on Win7 x64.

I've tried the automated .bat way, and the CMD way. Neither work. The BIOS switch is on position 1.
With the .bat way it looks like its doing it, then says to reboot, but GPUZ still reports a 6950.

With the CMD way it displays the flashing bar for about 1 second, then disappears, and does not say if its flashed it or anything. GPUZ still reports a 6950.

So what i need to do is boot from a USB stick and flash, not do it in windows (i've had this problem before when flashing in windows, never works for me).

But how exactly is this done? i think i'd have to get atiflash (not atiWINflash) and put that with the bios.bin on the USB stick, then type the commands which i think are the same as for the windows CMD way?
(atiflash -unlockrom 0 ... then... atiflash -p -f 0 bios.bin)

Is this correct? will it work? cheers.

Thanks but the problem with that is the HP USB tool does install on anything newer than the ancient XP OS. Dont work in compatibility mode either.

and the link to the disk format tool is broken... :(
