Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

I just noticed that my card was a bit hot considering I was just browsing these forums.

I checked in MSI and just scrolling a web page up and down jumps my clocks to 880/1375.

Is this normal? I wouldn't have thought It would need to run at max for web browsing.

thats not right pal,for browsing it should be 250/150

u got more than one screen connected to the card/pc ?

No, just the one. Sometimes it only jumps to 500 core and the memory stays at 150, othertimes it jumps to max. Seems to depend what website I'm on but only jumps when I scroll.

was i reading some where on these forums that maybe sites like youtube increase the clock speeds ? due to the videos or some thing

EDIT: just tried YT myself and it does indeed increase the clockspeeds, how very ghey

I know some sites with videos do raise speeds but mine even does it just scrolling through this thread. Wonder if it's a driver issue?

Does yours jump when just scrolling up and down on these forums?

are you using a web browser that has hardware gpu acceleration like the firefox 4 beta 8 ?
this will make the gpu clocks ramp up and down as you scroll

i have the standard FF and the beta 8, and the standard one doesn't affect gpu clocks

It was afterburner that was causing it. Not sure why but with it closed the clocks stay down. Will just have to run it when gaming rather than on startup. Cheers all

Just swapped over from an Nvidia 8800 to this card and was quite surprised when my friend told me about this thread.

Flashed it with command line without any problems and it runs like a dream.

Would love another to link them up in xfire but dont know if there are any problems with the cards with them being new and all. Any good reviews with these cards flashed and xfire'd up ?

What's the deal with Catalyst drivers and doing this mod?

I've got two ASUS 6950s on order, hoping to unlock both. I was planning to install one card with drivers completely wiped, install latest drivers (10.12a?), test card works "as is", flash to 6970 then test stability. Then repeat the process with the second card (replacing the first) before finally installing them both to be used properly in Crossfire.

What I'm not sure about is whether I would have to uninstall and reinstall the drivers each time I switch the cards, and/or after doing the BIOS update. Or can I just install the drivers once and switch the cards back and forth, turning them from 6950s to 6970s (hopefully!) without issue?

Thanks in advance!

I've taken the plunge and ordered one, after a few days of deliberating. I know it won't be a huge improvement over my 5870, but I was thinking that the 5870 will be worth more to sell now than in 6-8 months time for the next gen.
I'll def be doing this mod though and will report back.
