Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

Mr.B

Run the ATUWinflash.exe as a Admin (right click, run as admin)

Select the unlock.bin and then hit the program button. You should see a progress bar and a message saying erasing eprom and then programing eprom. After that a message to reboot.

The tool did not work without Admin rights for me.

let us know how you get on.

Just use the full instructions from the techpowerup link for winflash, worked perfectly for me.

Thats what i did. I've had this problem before when flashing my 5870, whenever i try to flash through windows it does not work. But it will work on other computers... but i dont have another at the moment to use.

Also tried that. It said "Could not erase ROM" so i tried the CMD way and also the automated .bat way. Neither work...

hi

i am new 2 forum. i have read on sum other forums that it does void ur warrenty when u flash the bios. so basically i anytime u had issue with the 6950 ur in 4 a totall loss?
basicly yes.

but if u buy a card from ocuk, your allowed to oc it without messing up the warranty with ocuk.

so if the card dies or if the card starts to get graphic problems just flash it back then rma it to ocuk...

maybe thats a cheeky way.

Ok Mr.B.

Click the windows icon and search for CMD.

When windows find cmd.exe, right click and left click Run as Admin. This will run the command line with full admin rights.

it may be worth having the mod folders in you user area

From the command line you should see:

c:\user\<your name>

type: cd <name of the mod folder from techpowerup>
type: flash_to_6970.bat

let me know how you get on :)

Thanks for the help everyone... i've managed to get it working :) I updated my motherboards BIOS, and reinstalled the drivers. Now it's flashed fine using CMD.
Now for the second card and some stress tests...

Happy for you Mr.B

Your guna X-fire these beasts - wow. Please post single versus dual cards benchies :)

I may do a it too later on, I need to upgrade my procy first - still running a Q6600 :0

well just tried my other vtx 6950, flashed it with asus 6970 and wow its running no problems at 940/1440 its also running a full 8+ degrees cooler than my other one that cant hack anything over 890/1375. shroud has already been taken off, will get a screwdriver tomorrow to open the four visable screws on the x plate at the back so i can get the heatsink off, put some arctic on and see how it goes. im hoping when finished it will run cooler and clock like the other but i think im just kidding myself about the clocking:(

Well i flashed the second card... problem is, because of the extra heat, these are now WELL loud in crossfire, almost twice as loud as my 5870's in crossfire. I'm now thinking of just getting two 6970's because it's so bad (because i think the 6970's have better cooling?)

I'll post some benches soon though..

Edit: posted benches below!

it works on win7 x64 so it should work on vista x64

Dunno mate, I get the error " can't find graphics information" or sumet along them lines. Lot of ppl on Google having the same issues, but in all instances the stories I read were over a year old.

Will have to put some arctic on anyway as I will be crossfiring soon and it running as cool as poss. Will probe watercool too so at least I will know how to take it apart.

Off to bed now

well, i finally got around to doing my HIS with that batch file off TUP.

got the right number of shaders, haven't touched any OCing and just running a heaven benchmark on it now. score 871? - no artifacts or anything.

guess this means i have a 6970 then :D

will prolly still need to overclock the sucker though to play crysis at 2560x1600 aren't i? :o

EDIT

940 with 880 clock. forgot to change that :o

GPU temp around 93C after the furmark benchmark. figure it's ok as the fan isn't going anywhere near full tilt.

Well they've got 96 FPS @ 1920x1080.
I got 99 FPS @ 1920x1200 - so a slightly higher res too. Seems fine to me!
The other benches i did are at 2560x1600.

Mr.B, thanks for the benchies. These cards seem to scale very well indeed.

Roll on the 9th so I can check out SB prices and may pick up another 6950 :)
