Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

What is the success rate of unlocking?

I will be building a new pc at the end of the month and wondering what card to go for. Im very tempted by a 6950 and unlocking it to a 6970, but then if it doesnt work im stuck with the lesser of the 2 cards. Ofcourse i have the option of buying a second, but that means another waterblock and a new power supply.

Success rate seems very high.

There are as one would expect reports of cards (presumably memory) that can't handle it, one of my ASUS 6950 cards gives sparklies on the desktop and total corruption in any 3D app at 6970 speeds.

If you are concerned, just buy a 6970 and be done with. :)

I think all the cores will unlock the cores. The RAM is another thing so my recommendation would be to download an updated 6950 with unlocked shaders and then overclock the core of the card as that is what it matters these days for performance.

So whats the deal with being able to unlock these into 6970's? A major slipup by AMD or just a slight oversight?

Same for their CPUs, keep reading about people buying dual cores and getting fully working quad cores.

Surely this is losing them a lot of money?

My twins sapphire 6950 unlock to 6970 at 950/1450 :D

what sort of difference are we looking at by just using the asus bios that unlocks the shaders ?

@ zpaf

what process did you follow to flash both cards ? i might do mine tonight
did you do them 1 at a time, or leave both in ?

Just joined the forum to report success with XFX 6950 winflashed using XFX 6970 bios. I've had 890 core / 1375 mem stable for 2 days now.

53.4 FPS / Score 1345 in Heaven 2.1 (@1920x1080)

How are you guys geting smart doctor to work with asus6970 bios? I installed it and rebooted but soon as i try run it, It says Error, Can not find graphics card information
Tryed installing different drivers from asus and ati site but no luck

thanks zpaf

does anyone know what will happen if i dont take the cards out and flash them both at the same time via winflash

also, do i flick the switch when system is off or while in winflash ?

Much easier way of flashing guys....

Follow this link for info and this one to download all the files ready to go.

It works perfectly and even runs a backup of your original bios. :D

Big thumbs up to Techpowerup

Just broke 10k barrier with 2 6950 in crossfire flashed to 6970.
