Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

Do you have any evidence to back up that it wont?
When new drivers are released that might increase performance at the cost of more power?
What about when they fully enable voltage tweaking to improve overclocks?
Maybe not now, what about 9 months down the line?

W1zzard did some through Power testing and concluded it shouldn't be an issue.

At the end of the day overclocking is a risk if there are issues and we will find out in a few weeks I would have thought then I will just flash back to 6950 Bios.

Thanks for posting this as 6950 (flashed to 6970) one of the options I was considering trying for.
Disappointing though.

the cards DO suck at cooling
even 1 on its own

I have the card in question flashed to 6970 and the highest temp I have seen is 64c when benching.

Assuming it doesn't cause any damage.
This is the thing, it might take time before we really know, but the longer we wait the greater the chance AMD stop it being possible.
Then I'm left with a 6950 (or 2) that I don't want.

the asus oc 6970 bios uses 1.175v so it looks like i can oc higher.

I was going to flash to that but changed my mind and used a sapphire 6970 bios.

How long does the actual "flashing" process take? Mine's been at the "erasing vbios in progress, please stand by" screen for a good 10 minutes or so now

just tested my card at stock 890/1375 , it's fully stable.

Is that with power on +20?

Try with power on + 20 otherwise you will not be getting the full power of the card

No artifacts in Windows, ran 3Dmarks and didnt see any either. Yes, have upped to +20%.

It does it sometimes and not others.

I got green lined flickering across the screen and green snow, which made me think to drop the memory clock 25mhz. I did and it is fine. I then put it back to stock 6970 (still with +20% of course) and it ran fine. Strange...

Perhaps we need a 6970 bios that we can put +20% on yet with a 1350mhz clock for the ram?

I have to visit relatives now but will post later on .

What did you use to drop the ram 25mhz as it wont let me do it CCC

Dropped my Ram to 1350 (25mhz) and put slider to +20

No artifacts although it made no difference to perfromance.

Got 1377 @ 880/1350 @ 20+%

Got 1380@ 880/1375 @ 0%

About 25mm gap between the 2 cards. They're sat next to each other on a Gigabyte P55-UD5 board.

whats their idle temp?

Have you got the fans on auto?
