Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

I bought an Asus 6950 and I don't think it has the dual bios on it. Is this ok to flash? I've just been to the shop and the card I bought is no longer available. What's happened to it? I don't want to flash it in case I brick it and I'm also a bit worried about where it's gone.

Ok, found the dual bios switch, looking in the wrong place!

Just tried to flash it following the instructions and I get the following error message:

subsystem ID's mismatch

What am I doing wrong now?

What method are you attempting to use?

I've tried the one on the first page using winflash.

I wouldn't use the original method, simply slapping a 6970 bios onto a 6950 can potentially burn out the onboard memory.

You should mod your own bios to enable extra shaders, and then overclock to 6970 speeds using afterburner. The link for the package is on here somewhere/on tech powerup.

I'd link you myself but I'm at work, sorry.

Ok, thanks. I'll just read through the thread till I find what I'm looking for.

Flashed my MSI 6950 to a 6970 today no problems.

Have had it stable at 940 / 1400 1.175V and gained about 4fps in Heaven at 1680 * 1050.

Can run it at 920 / 1400 at 1.1V too (on the shader unlocked ASUS bios and overclocking using Afterburner)

I did think i'd bricked it at one point though, tried running at 960 / 1400 at 1.175 and it froze on me and just stayed on a black screen everytime I tried to boot.
Just switched the Bios switch back to 2, booted successfully, powered down, back to bios 1 boot again and re-flashed again to be sure it wasn't corrupted once windows was booted.

Although strangly since that incident, I get nothing displaying on the monitor now throuout the whole POST procedure. The first thing I see is the windows logo and then the desktop. ??
Anyone explain that one?
Not massivly bothered as if I need to get into the mobo bios then I can just flick the card over to pos 2, but still its odd!!

Will post some screenies tomorrow when I am not at work.

Does this method still work OK? Plan on doing it to a 6950 but I need to know if it will work 100%, and does it work on 1Gb versions and the MSI TwinFrozr (something like that!) fine?

I bought two XFX 6950 cards.
What is the best way to flash each card? Install one card first then flash and then remove and install the second card and flash?
Do I need to use a particular PCI-e slot for flashing or will any slot do?
At work at the moment but trying to get anything ready in my head so I can do this tonight.
Thanks.

Done it! The unlock option worked and now my card is flashed. Just gonna do a benchmark and see what I get.

How do you insert the unigine pics from the heaven benchmark? Been ages since I've done it. Just want to show mine now I've unlocked the shaders to make sure it's ok.

OK, so if I get this I will 100% be able to flash it? I believe it is a Rev1 board so it should but I don't know for certain! Also read it is recommended to use a modded 6950 BIOS that unlocks the stream processors etc rather than a 6970 BIOS as it may cause damage to the RAM chips. Opinions on that and what BIOS would you recommend?

Just buy this one, it is cheaper...

Yes you will be able to flash it. 99.9% chance that it will work. Most overclockk nicely to 930-950 on the core but you might have to push the voltages up a bit

The reason I was going for the other one is because I planned on getting a RV02 and it wouldn't match the colour scheme as you see the underside of the card with that case, but now it looks like I should wait for a second hand TJ07 so it won't be an issue.

Coming from a 9800GTX this should be fantastic!
