**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

Just ordered some Michelin Pilot SS (based on the fact that Gibbo says they are the best tyre to grace the earth). For £410, they better be worth it

Thought I would update this based on having these for the last 2 days with over 500 miles.

Firstly, they replaced, IMO, the worst tyre I have ever had, Conti CS5P. They were great at first but performance nosed dived quickly. Very loud tyre too.

Anyway, it's possible that the MPSS could be my new tyre choice. I got them for £410 (275/30R19) shipped next day from the Netherlands as no UK stock (Funky Tyres)

1st thing I noticed: How light are these tyres!! Crazy, they seem / feel very light indeed.
2nd, very quiet tyre. That might be because the CS5Ps were stupidly loud, but these are a refreshing change.
3rd, smooth, they seem to enjoy soaking up bumps
4th, grip. Had the opportunity to enjoy that bright orange ball in the sky the last two days and the roads have dried and they sure do grip well. The splattering of rain this afternoon didn't phase them too and grip levels seemed to be very high.

Too early to tell if points 3 and 4 will remain consistent but early signs are good :)

Awesome tyres! :)
Though I might get some F1 AS2 for my Jaaaag as its winters have nearly had it and well F1 AS2 will be a perfect all year round tyre on a car designed for comfort, so the cheesy sidewalls of the F1's can't be any worse than winters which are also silly soft.

The PSS hold their performance from new until destroyed, as I've said many times the 911's are down to 2mm rear tread, they grip as well as the day I got them, even more impressive is how well they still work in these cold/wet condition with so little tread left. In short I will not fit any other tyre to my cars as PSS is unbeatable, its such a perfect all rounder, track, road, dry, wet, last a super long time, perfect tyre. Unfortunately PSS is only available for one of my cars. :(

Going to need 2 tyres for my car soon. Currently got Eagle F1 GSD3 and happy with them, but they're getting hard to find now.
Limited options for decent 'new' tyres in my size (205/50/16) - no newer F1s then GSD3, no newer Contisport then 2...

F1s are 1mm or so off the markers, lasted about 12k so far. Similar or better wear would be nice.

Any suggestions, or should I stick with finding some GSD3s?

Right so, increased pressure to front and back, went up .2 bar as a feeler and cruised up and down a short junction stretch of the motorway.

Nay. Still the same missing feedback through the steering at speed.

I think whatever Pilot Sport is out in the future when I next change tyres is what I'll try instead. Will have to just deal with these AS2s until then. Great grip and low speed feedback but high speed feels too much like I'm driving with a heavy front end (E39 kind of feedback).

I've had my PSS on my RX-8 for almost a month now and 100% agree Gibbo :). In the wet they are wonderfully progressive and offer a great amount of grip (more than I was expecting to be honest!). As the sun was out over the weekend I managed to have a quick blast and was astounded by the amount of grip and feedback given. Cannot wait for more extended warm sunny weather :)

Really pleased to hear that they seem to hold performance when worn down! I really cannot see me getting anything else now I have had these :D

Michelin do seem to have that with their Pilot Sport range of tyres, FEEDBACK! :)

Anyone use Uniroyal Rainsports 2

Had some fitted to my Boxster and really impressed with the performance...

Just ordered 2x CSC5s for the back of my MX5 as they are heading towards the replacement time and I can definitely feel the loss of grip recently. £65 fitted a piece. Could probably do it a little cheaper if I bought them and got them fitted localy but for simplicities sake I chose eTyre.

No place on a Porsche to be honest, they are a poor tyre, had them on the Jaaag and on that they are OK, but they are soft and as the name suggest good in the wet, but as a tyre for a performance car, simply no.

What your impressed with is the performance and balance of your mid-engine layout, really impress yourself and fit some tyres to really take advantage of that car. Such as Bridgestone RE050A, Michelin PS2 are good on those and dare I say it Michelin PSS if available in your sizes, but any of these mentioned will transform the car.

To be fair..

They had Michelin Pilots on before, I'm noticing minimal difference!

Maybe the track would tell another story but for my day to day driving which is a few miles through the city then the occasional day off blast into the country..

See above, read great reviews online and over at ph, some guy even using them on a Ferrari, heard there is next to nothing in it between CS5 and these so thought I'd try them out!

Your car doesn't have the same balance as a prancing horse though :p

In the same way I find the AS2 to lack feedback at speed whereas other people find them amazing in different cars.

We can only accumulate our own experiences for the greater good of sharing that knowledge I guess.

Gosh, this must make them the tyre industries best kept secret. Conti will be disappointed to find the millions poured into R&D on the current flagship tyre has resulted in a product no better than a 10 year old Uniroyal mid range.

Or it just makes them a rather good buy still.

You've had your Boxster for 5 minutes, hardly got used to it and changed some worn out Pilot Sports for some Rainsport 2 and say they seem the same.

No offence but does that not back up what I said, the Pilot Sport is better if it can match a brand new tyre?

In all seriousness the Rainsport 2 as others have said is an old tyre, there are many tyres now which are superior, the rainsport 2 strong points are its good wet performance and ability to still switch on in colder weather to an extent.

Like Fox says, new tyres have come on a long way, I only recommend Pilot Sport 2 because the Pilot SuperSport is not available in a lot of smaller sizes yet.

If like you say your just driving around town or cruising about then the rainsport will probably give added comfort, my needs from a tyre are feedback, incredible dry grip with ability to go on track with wet traction being an added bonus. For me the rainsport 2 would not go anywhere near my Porsche, I'd rather not even fit them to the Jaaag to be honest as I thought they were crap. Next tyres for Jaaaag will be F1AS2 as they are one of the best wet tyres, are relatively cheap and have soft walls so will be comfy. If you wanted a soft comfy tyre you should have gone with F1AS2 its vastly superior to rainsport 2 in everyway plus its a good dry tyre and suits lighter sporty cars it seems such as Boxster and Simon is impressed with them on his S2000.

Looking at CSC5's to replace my 255/35/18 rears: http://lovetyres.com/tyre/Continental-Sport-Contact-5/255-35-18

Anyone suggest any others for between £140-175? Ideally, I don't want to stretch to £175 as it's a tight month but I can do if worthwhile.
Will be doing around 1k miles a month give or take 2-300 and it will be roughly 75-80% motorway driving.

Goodyear as an alternative http://lovetyres.com/tyre/Goodyear-Eagle-F1-Asymmetric-2/255-35-18

Or the Contis are slightly cheaper at camskill http://www.camskill.co.uk/m61b0s22p...Eff_:_E_Wet_Grip:_A_NoiseClass:_2_Noise:_73dB
