**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

I'm about to order a set of winter tyres and I'm wondering what the best thing to do is.

If I want run-flats the only choice in the right sizes are Pirelli Sottozero Serie II, but if I'm happy to go with non run-flats I can get Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4's or ContiWinterContact TS830P's.

They're all around $1000 for 4, so it comes down to performance and the run-flat thing. I'm tempted to just go with the Pirelli run-flats but does anybody feel the other options are better?

Had a couple of weeks on the AD08R's now and and completely blown away by them and glad I chose them over the NS2R or another set of 595RSR's. I gave them my first bit of spirited driving a few days ago in the dry and they feel more controllable on the road compared to the 595 due to the slightly softer sidewall not tramlining nearly as much on poor road surfaces, wet weather performance is more than adequate for how I drive on those conditions.

Glad I followed the advice of people on here :p

ARGGGHHH!!!! FFFFSSSS!!!

I have had a tyre on (GY EAG F1 ASY2 FP 94Y XL) for less than 1 month, and now has a bloody nail in it, and from the looks of it, it is outside the T area for allowing repairs on. FFS. Why ******* me!?

**** you roads and all the **** you have on you.

Ok, so given my last post and the fact that the puncture is outside of the repairable area, has anyone ever taken out the warranty feature that Tyre Shopper do...

"Tyre Accidental Damage Lifetime Guarantee"
https://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/faqs/tyre-accidental-damage-lifetime-guarantee

Do any other online shops do anything similar?

I guess this would have saved me a fortune by basically getting a new tyre for free, but possibly being charged for fitting.

Can anyone recommend me tyres for 205/50R17

It seems to be an awkward size. I was thinking about the Continental Sport Contact 5. That or the Nankang NS-2.

:p

That's the size for my Mondeo Mk3 — Continental Sport Contact 5 all the way.

I'm about to get mine replaced, this will be the third set of Conti SC5s and they are great.

*edit* I've always gone for the W93 rating which is a bit more expensive than the link crinkleshoes just posted. Here's the link to the W93.

Maybe it's not necessary for a 54 plate Mondeo and I should save myself a few quid?

V and W are max speed ratings

V is 149mph / 240kph
W is 168mph / 270kph

I'm not sure if your Mondeo can even do over 150mph? So I doubt you'd need to pay the extra.

The price difference isn't massive though.

I've always done it based on the load rating (more than the speed) - I think Ford recommend going for a high rating.

I don't know if there's much practical difference between 89 and 93 for a little old Mondeo…

Ordered the CS5. Thanks for the recommendations.

Is Hunter Wheel alignment still highly recommended? Or is it OK to fit the wheels at any reputable garage and ask them to do a 4 wheel alignment based on which ever method they see fit?

Car is a 2L Renault Megane Coupe.

The difference is 50kg per corner... but the 89 loading is 580kg already... so is rated to be happy with up to a 2320kg max car weight (with 50/50 weight distribution). They're always under-rated for safety... so even if it was a 60/40 weight distribution (which it isn't)... then you would still be OK with a car of up to 1930kg maximum.

Which is beyond a Mondeo's actual total weight of about 1580kg.

The actually weight distribution of a Mondeo is quite close to 50/50... according to a quick google search.

I'd be happy with the cheaper ones, but it makes sense if you'd feel safer with the higher load rating.

Recommended yes - decent laser alignment at the least... doesn't have to be hunter, but that's the highest rated brand/machine

Awesome, thanks for the comprehensive reply. :) V89 it is!

Noticed a tiny little bit of cosmetic damage to one of my PS3s last night - a very small nick/flap into the rim protection band.

Only a very thin slither of rubber, so planning on just sticking it back down - anyone know what sort of glue will work?

Well after ~10k miles in my Uniroyal Rainsport 3's, they need replacing.

Fantastic tyre, excellect in all weather, but stand out in the rain. Fill you with confidence.

Do i keep these? Certainly.

Wore out a little faster than other brands, but for £70 per corner fitted, cant complain.

I take it nobody has looked at this ^^ before then?

Right, I've not been following the latest tyre's and stuff for a while now. Is Michelin Pilot Super Sport still the best tyre to get? Thats what I've got on my super charged FN2 at the moment and they've been fantastic. Front's are down to 2.5mm so would like to replace them soon. Rear's are still like new! :)
