**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

Check the width.

when I went from 205/50r17 to 225/40r18 I saw a 6mpg loss on average.

Is it worth it?

I will be going from 205/55/16 to 225/40/18. I could go 215, but 225 is about £100 cheaper

70% of my driving is fairly efficient, in that it's mostly 40-50mph with the odd motorway and next to no stopping, so mpg loss should be minimal. I did read that you can get a noticeable loss if your drive is stop start, so I'm not too worried about that.

Also I get around 55mpg at the minute.

I'll also have more grip in the corners, so it should equal out in that respect.

I somehow doubt it was 6mpg - at lot of cars have a choice of 3 different size wheels/tyres e.g. 16"/17"/18" all on the same car, there is not going to be 6mpg on the same car. 1 or 2 mpg maybe, same as between different brands of tyre.

Need a new set for my TTRS soon, currently got Continental Sport Contact 5 fitted. What else would people recommend?

255/35/R19 XL

For a high performance car like that I'd be looking at Michelin Pilot Super Sports, as they are likely the only tyre better than your CSC5's in that size.

CSC6 are better than the Super Sport in all UK road scenarios pretty much and are cheaper + newer. It makes no sense getting a soon to be EOL tyre over a newer, better and cheaper tyre.

:( Odd they didn't show up when I looked on Blackcircles for that size

Cheers - its a 2012 3.0 TDI A5 - mostly motorway commute / work related runs (400 miles a week or so average), dads taxi and some back-road shenanigans

Booked in for an MOT on Saturday so will see what they suggest and take a look at the CSC5s

Cheers :)

EDIT : Its booked in Kwick Fit and they are showing £118.99 fitted for the CSC5s will see how many I need, but suspecting 4 :/

As expected car failed its MOT needing two new front tyres - quoted me £130 odd for Pirellis and no CSC5s in and couldn't match their own website price (£237.98) !

So kept him on the phone - booked into his garage for Tuesday morning for the CSC5s and then got him to book the re-test for the same time - what a pavlova !

It's somewhat worrying that there are people out there who wait for an MOT to tell them if their tyres are still OK or not.

It's not as if it's difficult to look at your tyres

It was actually the other way round - spotted the front tyres looking worn and thought it was due an MOT so I'd book them both in at the same time

Got it in the local KW as soon as I could as I was away with work (not in the car) for a few days and they said they had plenty of tyres in stock - obviously not the ones I needed / wanted at the price I could get from their website

It's a mile down the road so no biggie to drop it off Tuesday morning, walk home, work from home then pick it up later in the day when it's ready

I had my front tyres replaced about 2 months ago, if I'd have waited till my MOT it would be another 2 years.

It really isn't hard to check the wear markers and get them changed at 3mm.

Quick question garage wouldn't do my tracking, said my tyres being a bit worn would make it misread.
True or are they pulling a fast one?

My Octavia has Bridgestone Potenza's S003 from the factory and they are truly horrid in the wet/Damp really slippy and I have a serious lack of confidence in the wet even with my sedate driving.

Any recommendations for something in a 225/45/18 that gives a better all round grip without costing the earth....

Cheers

Sport contact (probably 5 as I don't think they do 6 in 225 45), Eagle F1's or PS4's are unlikely to disappoint.

If you don't want to spend the money on a premium tyre then Hankook Evo's are decent tyres, albeit really not much less expensive than the above.

People also seem to really like rainsoprt 3's, which I personally think are pretty average - but they are relatively cheap and far from dangerous.

Under no circumstances put pilot sport 3 on the car - they are on my my Octavia from the previous owner and are hugely disappointing given the money they cost.

just had some Goodyear F1 AS2 fitted on my leon estate but feeling a bit disappointed with them in wet conditions they feel very soft and feel like they want to slide
