Unreal Engine 4, exclusively to target consoles

Good.

Once the money making console tardish making companies screw off proper PC games will crop up.

:p

I love how Epic make a statement like this and suddenly they're "bad developers"

Actually i wouldn't say bad, more like stale. Companies like id and epic seem content to sit on their collective arses and rehash the same multiplayer experience with better graphics every so often.

PC gaming imo has moved beyond that, i really dont think theres that many people that want to play yet another quake\unreal multiplayer with the only difference being the graphics look nicer. Unreal apparently peaked at 2k4, personally i liked the original ut99 and thought the followups while looking nice weren't as good.

Now epic are throwing their toys out of their pram because they delivered a game that was massively delayed (even though they wont admit it was) and delivered nothing but nicer graphics.

It just smacks of them being childish and acting like "why aren't the pc community kissing our arses like they did for 2k4??". I like the UE3 engine because its about the only engine out there that makes good use of quad core, but ut3 delivered nothing new in terms of gameplay...if anything most people were ranting it was dumbed down for consoles.

I wish games companies would put more effort into developing multiplayer modes that are interesting and appeal to everyone, with quake and unreal games its pretty much the companies pandering to the same crowd over and over, and god help them if they change anything in the slightest because the hardcore players will kick up a fuss that the glitch they whored out that gave them an advantage no longer works.

Pc gaming needs to evolve not stay with the same stagnant multiplayer that id and epic games have offered over and over and over again.

I quite liked UT3. Fast paced and a great looking game. Though I would've preferred a tournament type thing like in ut2k4 rather than the silly campaign, its multiplayer where it shines. Played and always had fun on it.
(not saying I didn't enjoy the previous ut games. always enjoyed em, all of em. this was in no way a disappointment for me anyway)

(someone should stand up and defend it :p)

I would think awful applies, if it was its own IP from a smaller game developer I would be more leniant on my choice of words... but for Epic, who have enjoyed great success with the afformentioned games of higher standards, as well as having a great wealth of experience to draw upon. To then create a game based on the same IP as well as attempt to be the successor to their throne, then somehow manage to make this (UT3)... something that pales in comparison to its predecessors - I stand by awful.

I knew UE3 was a polished turd when I tried to setup a custom match, my word, that user interference...I mean interface was downright shocking.
Once I got into the game I had a large slice of Deja Vu pie with my dissapointment on the rocks.

Now, on the developer side, they even cocked up on that side too, only shipping the UED3 tutorial videos with the collectors edition???

Yes, CliffyB needs a large shot of reality, a really large shot of reality.

To be fair, he just needs shot. No self respecting person would nickname them self "CliffyB". He does suit it though, running around with his surfer dude style acting like a complete and total pillock.

I remember watching some video interview recently, where he was part of a panel, and cringing every time he spoke.

It's a shame that the engine will be optimised for PC last, I think possibly one of the selling points of UE3 was the fact that it seemed to offer very easy portability, certainly between xbox360 and the PC.

tbh lets face it, porting from the 360 to PC nowadays isnt really that big a problem as it once was.. we obviously get pap ports sometimes, but anything generally worth playing does have decent ports usually?

It makes sense from penny pinching corporate perspective - it's one set of hardware, with clear limitations, you don't really have to go into stretch trying to jump over competition, optimize the engine for latest graphics etc.

Lol, "let them do it" is what I say, they are obviously now being lead by their "Id, Epic & SuperEpic".

It is indeed a shame that the PC will lose out on such a great engine, but I'm sure Valve are loving every second of this.
Once Valve start to forget about 3rd party games and remember their own steam / source engine then it might work out for the best.

Valve imo are really one of the only true pc developers left. They see the pc as their most important platform and put out quality games unlike some of the turds we've had as of late. Orange box was probably the best release for the pc in a few years as far as shooters go.

It's the best release for the PC in the last few years regardless of genre.
COD4? 4?, try Portal 1.
Pity though, I'd love for a classic platformer or any of the earlier PC stuff to find the yellow brick road back home, Commander Keen is still fresh in my mind, even the PC arkanoid clone called Popcorn which just managed to work on my 4.77Mhz Intel 8086.

In case you haven't seen it already, the original article is well worth a read and I'd say it's CustomPC taking it way out of context. Sweeney simply says that development of the new engine will be timed with the release of the new consoles, which does make some sort of sense given the technical limitations that come with them.

UT3 aint as bad as a lot of you are making out

i know its not as good as UT99 and UT2004 but if you want to see i truly bad game go play starship troopers

The PC Market isn't the serious market for game developers who don't charge a fee to play, i.e. World of Warcraft.

Developers lose a lot of money as piracy is rife in PCs. Yes, it's there on consoles, but it's not close to the same level of loss through PC gaming, so developers who want to make money find it easier to develop for consoles (fixed hardware and online support) rather than PC.
