Upcoming M3 chips

I bit, had to be done.. £4499 down the swanny perhaps, we shall see. It just means that a mint base M2 air and the 16" M1 pro will be going up for sale in the coming weeks along side any other apple products that are sat gathering dust such as the 12.9" iPad pro, watches and no doubt a number of phones! ... Need to recoup my outlay somehow!

On a side note, I only play WoW and this will be a massive bump over an M1 pro so that means I can ditch the gaming PC too. I'm getting old..

Well, if you have a spare kidney going..........

It's typical Apple. Consistent incremental updates and before long it will be huge. Already 30% ahead of M1 in ST.

The biggest difference is the chip differentiation.

M2 Pro and Max had the same CPU arrangement, 8P-4E cores. With M3 series it's a bit difference. M3 is 4P-4E, M3 Pro is 6P-6E and M3 Max is 12P-6E. Memory bandwidth for M3 Pro has also decreased compared to M2 Pro.

Apple has realised that just bigger GPU and more IO are not enough for people to upgrade to the Max tier products. So they changed the segmentation. We'd end up paying more.

Grabbing buggers really aren't they. So not content in getting people to upgrade from base to Pro, they now want customers shelling out for Max to see better benefits.

On Geekbench at least the M3 Max scores about the same as the M2 Ultra so around that level at least for CPU.

So M3 Max should be a large difference compared to M1 Max.
Thank you! The only thing Apple have that I am interested in is the Mac Studio so assuming it comes out at the same time next year the M3 Max version will be in June. Plenty of time to think about whether it is worth the upgrade.

No main reason is m3 sucks.

Apple have peaked with this tech

Which part of M3 sucks? Is there another chip that offers better performance at similar power profiles?

they definitely have peaked, im sure the m4 and m5 would be similar jumps in performance per year and nothing substantial.

The jump has been quite substantial for a product that was already leading in performance. You can't expect 50% faster CPU cores every year, Intel and AMD can't deliver this either.

Where do they go from here? Do they have to wait until ARM come up with a new design before they can iterate on it?

They will continue to do their own designs as they have done for years. Apple doesn't use ARM cores, they've gone in radically different directions years ago.

But don't they have to use the ARM instruction set? Or are they doing their own extensions which ARM themselves can then adopt if they want to?

I'm not sure. They certainly license the full ARM instruction set but I have no idea they have added anything extra on top. I think part of the contract would say that any additions must be backwards compatible (this is a complete guess but seems reasonable).
