Upgrade from the 4770k ?

I just use my asus rog motherboards xmp preset settings for the memory oc.

Give ocing the cpu a try just bump the cores and voltage a little at a time and then run a few games with the cpu temp running just to keep an eye out. You will soon know if you have hit a speed that's unstable as it will crash. Or if your cooler can't handle the v it will hit a high temp :)

Just wanted to thank everyone, Ive O/c'ed to 4.2, my temps have dropped from 80 plus when gaming to a steady 50 under a full load (4k, max settings etc) and it does feel like theres been a nice little upgrade done, nice and quiet too.

Now....should I water cool the Strax 980 ti ? :)

Very nice. You should get to 4.4-4.6Ghz with a bit of tweaking. Is that with one of the Antec AIO's?

Is it safe to use the utility that came with my MB to discover the best overclock
(its a gigabyte) or should it be done in bios?

Keeping in mind ive never done it before, but ive been building pc's for 20 plus years

It should be done in the bios really. It's the only way you will learn how to do it yourself even thoughs it's so easy these days. It's really just a case of increasing the multiplier and a couple of voltages. No tweaking fsb's or the vast assortment of voltages that we used to have.

Ok Thanks Buddy im upto 4.3ghz and according to "Core Temp" im at 1.30v, temps under a full load no more than 55, around 30-35 idle

Does voltage change under load?

That should be the max voltage you are hitting. It seems a lot for 4.3Ghz though. If you have speedstep and EIST enabled then when the cpu is idling the voltage should drop and ramp back up again when under load. Keep going. :D

Thanks

Whacked it upto 4.4

While on a game that mazes the cpu and gpu im getting

50-60 degrees on the cpu

and 1.39v max, it does drop to 1.30v quite often,

How am I looking?

PS thanks Again

Are you setting this in the bios or using the overclocking software that came with your board? The reason I ask is that 1.39v is very high for only 4.4Ghz.

I have been thinking about upgrading my 4770k as well mine is oc'd to 4.5 with a 1.25v. Some of the new games like The division and tomb raider rises run the cpu at 99% and after 30 mins of playing the cpu hits 75d thats with a h110i and 2 1500 140mm noctura fans on it !

I've had practically the same experience with my 4770k, 4.5Ghz for 1.25v except I'm on one of those refurb H100's and the stock fans that came with I think, never suffered any kind of thermal issues.

I did try putting 32Gb in a couple of weeks ago - got a really good deal on a 64Gb pack of Corsair XMS3 (8x8Gb for £173 new... ) and no matter what I tried I couldn't replicate my OC with all 4 RAM slots populated. If you want CPU grunt and aren't using the extra 16Gb try with 2 sticks of RAM and see what sort of OC you can manage?

I have all 4 ram slots populated and it make no difference to my overclock at all. My max is 4.8Ghz with either two or four sticks.

4.0GHz is 1.0V
4.1 ghz is 1.1V
4.2 is 1.30v
4.3 is 1.35v
4.4 is 1.39v

Does this mean I need to stick at around 4.1?

Are you testing for stability at each step or will it simply refuse to post with less voltage. Your voltages are extremely high for what are small overclocks. Look at Monkeh's post above, only 1.25v for 4.5Ghz.
