Romney is a very successful businessman who ran a great campaign.
The problem however is:
His views on abortion
His views on rape (although to be fair Todd akin actually screwed this one up)
His stance on foreign policy.
Regardless of the views on the first two, as has already been stated, due to his rather insensitive approach on foreign policy, if Romney had won we would have the US at war with Iran, and various trade issues with China.
kd
yes and no, they probably aren't his views(most more educated people simply don't believe in daft things but he may well have those opinions anyway). Its campaigning, to get both votes, get republicans out voting, and to get support of the other more "nutty" or over zealous types who both donate money to his campaign and go out and organise local campaigning politicians say whatever "motivates/activates" the demographics they need.
Say abortion is bad and he'll get 100 key republican voters to support him donate loads of money and time and call around other people to donate money and time. Say abortion is good and those guys will not give money, time or get others money or time.
I really wish people would wake up to this, the persona we know as Romney, or Obama, is a polished, PR written, marketing designed person designed to get money and votes, nothing more or less. I have no idea who Obama is, I just know who they guy he pretends to be is, same goes for Romney.
Add to the list General Tea party mentalism (if it's a word), Dick Mourdock's views on rape, Jeep moving to China and Obama destroying Ohio and the automotive industry, binders full of women, homophobes and 47%.
Just general idiocy and blunders by him and his fellow republicans cost him key votes.
This is more like it, things that are more exclusive, while saying "I think abortion should be more limited than it is now" will resonate with loads of republicans, saying pregnancies as the result of rape are gods plan or whatever it was, will resonate with a much smaller demographic and put off a larger demographic of republicans. Stuff like people around him saying stupid things hurt.
But ultimately how much do you reckon Romney got donated to him, and how much ends up in his and his friends pockets, by going into a room of republicans and telling them he wants to protect their money? Seriously, what if they decide he's there guy and donate millions in one way or another?
Campaigning, lying, making promises, its a job, it generates money for his team. Politicians will quite happily say one thing to one group to get their money, and the absolute opposite to another group to get their money, and neither time remotely believe what he's saying..... this is the point. What they say ultimately doesn't matter, its campaigning, its not real, what they do... somewhat matters. Democrats say one thing, essentially, lets boil it down to "rich people suck, lets help the poorest" but what you get is Clinton, absolutely screwed us all and made bankers trillions with some of the crap he did... all the while being a democrat and his party being anti big business. Obama said a lot of crap to get elected, what he's done... specifically in democratic terms, anti war terms, defence spending reduction, deficit reduction, health care reform, whats he achieved, nothing.
I wish people wouldn't focus on the soundbites, because most of them don't represent either candidate, at all, should potential presidents lie to everyone to line their pockets, no, do they, yes, should you take someone seriously who is mostly trying to suck up to people to give them money, no.
Here is a few statistical fact I've picked up last 24 hours.
Whites are shrinking by 2% every 4 years.
Latino are groaning by 2 % every 4 years.
By 2050, whites will be a minority in the US.
Historically over 80% of blacks votes for Democrats, even for Clinton and Kerry.
Over 70 % Hispanics voted for democrats this time
Asians votes for democrats are 50% more than republicans.
55% of women votes for democrats vs 45% for republicans, that's a 10% gap.
Majority of republican voters are middle age, white and middle class, they are not getting younger.
Basically, it seems that if the republicans do not change their policies in a big way, they will become extinct in a generation.
AFAIK Obama actually did very little to court the Latino vote and Romney went out of his way multiple times to talk to Latino groups and generally said everything they wanted to hear.
Ultimately what they say again doesn't matter, democrats are pro immigration, not racist and will help the Latino's/blacks, because that was more true, in a way, for the majority of the past 100 years. Ultimately Romney was saying and promising, and appearing at plenty of Latino events, he heavily courted their vote and got nothing, because Democrats are pro minority and Republicans hate them. That's all that matters, a long term image of what they are, based purely off this election Romney spoke to and said he'd do more for Latino's than Obama, yet Obama gets their vote.
People don't vote on sensible issues or what they hear, its negative add's, big stories to make either candidate look bad, and generations of having an idea of both parties stuffed into your head.
Look at Labour here, poor people think they are the working mans party, that they'll raise taxes on the rich, close tax loopholes, be good with unions and help the common man.... rubbish, on all counts, yet people still vote with those idea's because maybe at one time they used to be true.
Elections are a joke, voters are a bigger joke, the whole system is a joke.
Seriously what do people remember about this campaign, what did it boil down to, 47%, some daft pratt talking about rape who wasn't even Romney, and on the other side, campaigning after a disaster, unaware of how serious an attack was.
These were the key issues, not, who is going to close corp tax loopholes, stick it to the banks, get rich people to pay their far share, how the economy will be fixed.
