Just a quick query as I'm new to the whole news groups thing.

How secure is Usnet. I'm using paid for services (astraweb) with encryption enabled. How secure is this ie does it suffer the same problems as bit torrent?

Encryption prevents anyone from determining what the content of the traffic between the usenet hosts and yourself is, and the hosts make a point of not logging what anyone downloads, only bandwidth used - so it doesn't matter if their servers get raided or they are forced to turn over records.

With bit-torrent everyone can publicly see exactly what you're downloading/uploading. Usenet is a one to one connection with the server. So just on that fact alone, it's much more secure than bit-torrent.

As long as your package offers SSL then simply use SSL ports which will encrypt the traffic thus masking your activity to prying eyes.

Iv been with Astraweb now for about 6 months, cant fault them for £7 a month

Same, except been with them for a few years.

Astraweb is great, I pay ~£5 a month for unlimited downloads, unlimited bandwidth, SSL and 20 connections. As has already been mentioned, with SSL the only 2 parties inolved who know what you transfer is you and the usenet provider, and in astrawebs case they do not log what you download, just how much (for packages that have a limit on ammount transfered), I'm not sure if they log what is uploaded though, as I know some providers log what users upload incase they get a court order about something illegal being uploaded.

Not necessarily. BT traffic can be encrypted, just like USENET.

Yes, but everyone in the swarm downloading/uploading the same torrent as you can see your IP address, securely connect to you using SSL, download a chunk then send you an cheery settlement letter.

With usenet the only two parties who know what you are downloading are you and the newsserver you are connected to.

Great news, cheers guys. Initially bought my self the 25gb chunk with 20 connections just to see how I get on but will be sticking with astraweb I think!

Thats similiar to the deal I have with them, except I managed to sign up while they was doing a yearly deal which is $96 a year, so $8 a month. That realy was a limited time deal though and is no longer availabled, luckily I can keep the deal for as long as I want, but if I ever cancel it I can never get it back.

Switched to astraweb about 6 months ago, after having been with giganews for over 2 years. Cant believe how expensive giganews are in comparison for pretty much the same service (they do offer VyprVPN though).

Has anyone noticed that a small percentage of downloads on Astraweb are missing the repair blocks? If I download the same NZB on a free IPv6 Usenet server then they work fine.

It's a bit disappointing.

I've never had any issues with missing stuff on Astraweb, nothing that can't instantly be corrected with the PAR files anyway.

I'm really happy with Astraweb. STGill finding my feet and just learnt how to unpack/repair stuff. Using Newsleecher which although you pay for, seems very good.
