Usenet

I do wish people would stop talking about usenet. We don't want it to get too mainstream so they stop trying to shutdown the torrent sites and go after usenet instead. ;)

Unfortunately people won't. Luckily it's not as easy as logging onto a hugely famous website, clicking a link and downloading the content like it was with Torrent, so that should (hopefully) stop it from going too mainstream.

Astraweb is by far the cheapest I've seen too, and I mean cheap while still having excellent service.

Hmm so less connections but longer retention for a dollar more...

Hmmmm - not sure if its worth the switch really

ps3ud0

If you're on virgin you get a free binaries server with 3/4 day retention. Sign up to nzbmatrix to get free access to nzb files and for the grand cost of nothing you have a decent feed. Sure, I could pay for astraweb and it's reasonable, but as long as I get something wihin 3 days it's fine, if I miss it, then there are other places.

Would it worth me using Usenet even with a poor broadband connection?

2.5Mb is more than enough, you'll get better speeds than something like Torrent any day.

You may want to go for the 180GB package rather than a monthly sub from Astraweb, although it really depends how much you'll download. You'll have to figure out what works out cheapest for you.

I'm on 512K and Usenet works perfectly for me. Yes, it takes ages to download anything, but that doesn't mean it's pointless, just means I have to wait a bit longer to get the 'latest Linux Distro'.
