Uses For NFC Tags

Yeah, it does... but Tasker isn't very user friendly tbh

Tasker is VERY user friendly and intuitive, there's only a few basic concepts to understand.

Help is available from within the app, for each option or menu.

You have TASKS, which are a list of actions, ACTIONS which is an instruction (e.g. turn off wifi).

PROFILES are used as a condition when to carry out a TASK. For example, when I connect to this wifi network, turn phone to silent.

You just have to put in the effort to try different things. What is it that you're trying to do that you're having trouble with?

It really isn't, unless it's changed in the last 6 to 8 months. Twice I've had a go at understanding it, twice I gave up. Now I'm no genius, but I can usually figure things out with a little fiddling... not Tasker.

If you have a good tutorial (which in itself, might suggest it's not that user friendly) please post a link. I know some people that say it's the best thing since sliced bread, but also a LOT of people that just can't get their heads round it.

Can the tags work with the bb 9900 ?

Yes they do...have a pop over to crackberry and there are a few threads floating around about NFC tags and which ones you should get...i havent got round to ordering any or setting it up but i have the apps NFC shortcuts, which i won a free copy in one of the crackberry apps giveaway comps that they hold every so often.

In fact heres an article telling you which ones to buy and how it all works: http://crackberry.com/how-use-nfc-tags-blackberry

At present I have two by my front door, coming home and leaving. Set to turn WiFi off, do the reverse as I come home.

Isn't this done already automatically anyway without the need for NFC :p

I have wifi on all the time and as soon as I leave the range of wireless connection to the router that I am connected to, it then connects to the mobile data connection instead and as soon as I am back in range, it re-connects to wifi.

Well, I agree....same scenario for me, *but* the key thing is that the WiFi actually stays powered on, just not connected to anything...so, when wireless networks are detected, it will flag them up and such 'scanning' means battery is being used.
The NFC 'advantage' here is that the Wireless would be properly turned off/on rather than quietly carrying on regardless in the background :)

Does NFC not need to be turned on for this to work?

I mean will it not be a battery drain?

NFC is always on my default for the Galaxy Nexus. I don't think anyone actually bothers to turn it off.

Android Beam also wouldn't work without it always on.

NFC will soon be standard on phones I think, tags themselves can be bought for only £5.50 for 5, so how can they be used?

At present I have two by my front door, coming home and leaving. Set to turn WiFi off and set to vibrate as I leave, do the reverse as I come home.

I have one at work that does similar and will put one on my car holder to turn WiFi off, Bluetooth on and open the car app.

(I bought NFC Task Launcher so I could write the tags)

What I'm wondering, are there any other clever uses of NFC tags?

Same can be accomplished by using Llama on Android. How close do you have to be for the tags to trigger?

Like others said, I guess NFC is a battery drain whereas Llama uses cell id so it's not.

You can disable that feature too :p

But yeah that is true about the "background" scanning, although can't say that my battery life has been impacted hugely by leaving wifi on when out and about.

It seems to be much better now, but this used to be a huge drain, WiFi not connected means it's constantly looking for something to connect to, big drain.

I'm giving Tasker another go... and once again it's driving me crazy.

I've set a profile of Headset being plugged in. It should open and menu and set media volume to 14. I can see it detects the headphone, the profile goes green, but it doesn't carry out the tasks in the right hand side :( Why!?!!?

**EDIT** Nevermind, it's working now :o
