Uses For NFC Tags

Just downloading NFC Retag now. So that allows me to use my Barclaycard as a tag and use that to trigger functions rather than buying blank tags?

Yes so rather than programming the tag itself NFC retag can use read only tags and remember their unique ID and perform tasks based on each one via the app.

Am I missing something obvious? I've set a tag up on my Brodit car holder, changes all sorts including screen timeout to 10 minutes. Is there a simple way to undo it all when I exit the car, or should I set another tag up, put it on the door or something, to put everything back?

You would need two tags. Have you got bluetooth in the car? Far better to use that as a trigger for tasking in a car situation as unlike NFC you can task stuff when it goes out of range.

What Emebbs said, although I actually use "power" as the activating condition, as I only ever charge my phone in the car really. Bluetooth would probably be better though...

I've found that Tasker by default returns things to their previous state once the activating condition is not met, which is quite convenient. It saves the need for two separate tasks i.e. one for ON, one for OFF - which is what you would have to do with NFC tasks (unfortunately). I hoped NFC would be able to detect when an NFC tag was not in range any longer, and use that as the deactivating condition.

AndyCr15, what tasks do you want it to do? I had a bit of trouble with Tasker for a while but now it's working well.

NFC will soon be standard on phones I think, tags themselves can be bought for only £5.50 for 5, so how can they be used?

At present I have two by my front door, coming home and leaving. Set to turn WiFi off and set to vibrate as I leave, do the reverse as I come home.

I have one at work that does similar and will put one on my car holder to turn WiFi off, Bluetooth on and open the car app.

(I bought NFC Task Launcher so I could write the tags)

What I'm wondering, are there any other clever uses of NFC tags?

That's pretty awesome :)

If the next iPhone doesn't have NFC or some sort of bluetooth tagging technology, I'll be very disappointed...

In the car, BT on, sounds up, display 100, screen time out 10 mins.

OK so, you could create a new profile called "Car"

First Context > State > Net > Bluetooth Connected > add the address if you want (depends if you use bluetooth anywhere else).

Then: New task > add...

Audio > BT Voice Volume > 15
Audio > Media Volume > 15
Display > Brightness etc

GPS on will only work if rooted.

Press the tick and make sure you have a green "ON" in the bottom left of the Profiles screen. Also a green tick next to the Car profile you just created. This was the mistake I first made. I thought I had to press the green tick to get it to work... nah - green tick means it's enabled.

Can do screenshots if want?

Same. I've never had an iPhone but I hope the next one does have NFC because Apple are good at generating hype and will get useful services on board with the technology.

I'm trying to figure out how to crack my MIFARE Classic swipe card from work, so I can alter the amount of credit on there. Infinite vending machine food!

That's the thing... it seems when Apple start using a technology, it becomes the norm. Hopefully if Apple pick up NFC, it'll be more widely used. I'm looking at you contactless payments :p

Do you actually need to tap the tags for it to work? Or does it work say from a couple of meters?

Think the distance is up to 4 cms

I'm looking getting a few with my S3.

Put one on the desk next to my home pc to organise auto syncing.
Bedside table to turn 3g/wifi off and set alarm.
Diary to sync calendar.
thinking of one by the front door to turn on wifi.

Other future ideas:

with induction charging you could put one on the charger to sync whilst charging.
one near work pc to download agenda and sync/connect to work networks...

Received my Tags on Saturday ( http://rapidnfc.com/item/123/clear_nfc_tags_ntag203_round_29mm ) and they hold lots of information.
I've got quite a few setup:

2 by my bed, 1 for weekday which turns all volumes off except ringer, turns off notification light, turns off wifi and GPS etc and sets up alarms for 6:23 am and 7:05 am. The other one is for weekend where I don't need the alarm.

I walk downstairs and the one on my PC keyboard turns all the volumes up.

I get on my bike and there is one in my cycle mount which turns on GPS and Strava.

Get into work and the one on my keyboard turns volumes down and sets alarms for dinnertime and home time.

Back on my cycle and all volumes turn up with GPS and Strava.

There's one in my car mount to turn on GPS and Poweramp.

Absolutely brilliant.

Got myself some nfc stickers and fobs.. Makes tasks so much easier, got mine setup to turn off wifi, switch on blue tooth, load wave control and then load Google music to play music through my car stereo. All with the nfc tag.. Awesome
