Using the word 'gay' as a slur

lol, when people say 'gay' to describe something as bad or whatever it's hardly serious or with discriminatory intent is it? I simply cannot understand why anyone would find that offensive. Ridiculous if you do tbh.

I use the word gay all the time, as well as ******...etc, but it's all in jest and there's no malicious intent behind it. I'm nether a homophobe nor a racist.

I hope gay doesnt get adopted by the PC crowd in all fairness, its what I grew up saying and itll be hard taking that word away from my generation.
I still find racial slurs hilarious tbh, but only because only a complete idiot could use them seriously.

In all fairness? Do you deem it unfair for a word that no doubt does offend some people to be frowned upon because you used say it as a kid?

You may not be, but people don't know that. And using those terms could very well offend a lot of people - and you could end up in grave danger using them at inappropriate times.

i think said people need to grow up, grow a pair and realise that its not used in a spiteful context, and doesnt have the same stigma attached as words such as ****** and ****.
If i walked up to a gay and said "you gay" id like to expect a "so what" or "and?" response, some people are too soft in the head. Cotton wool anyone?
 
When I had a gay housemate he used to say it all the time. Mind you he's the most homophobic gay ever, he absolutely hates 'fags'!
 
I find it offensive how little effort is put into the insult, I think I'm worth more than a monosyllabic word.

:rolleyes: "If I walked up to a gay" What are we in the 50's or something? If you approached a gay and said you gay, if he didn't respond in the way you expect he'd be soft in the head? It's nothing to do with cotton wool, or PC nonsense, it's hardly "you can't say brainstorm anymore cause it might offend people with migraines" is it? I can understand why people would find it offensive, and also find it ludicrous that the devaluation of the words currency no doubt caused by it's overuse removes it from the same category as racial slurs or any other form of comment like that.

Interesting that those who don't consider it an insult or somehow less of a stigma are young. You, Kittenscake, Margaret ... all of college age whether you're there or not. Words do change their meaning and impact, maybe this is one of them to people of your younger age.
