Valheim

Would love to play this but with every early access game I end op playing it to much and never want to play it again once it comes out fully, but it does look fun from what I have seen

Definitely try and pace yourself with it. with only 5 or so developers it'll be a while between each content patch, which probably won't take long to complete if it's another boss etc if you're already maxed out.

Soooo... swamps are pretty alarming places, huh?

One attack from the first mob I encountered there had took me from full, food-boosted health to frantically running around getting my healing potion equipped to avoid dying as my HP ticked away. It was a damn close thing as well. And then my kid died three times in the next ten minutes. We resolved to return to base and make some better food and potions. This is going to be a challenge...

Lol I see you possibly met the Ooze or a Slime? Their poison ticks as I mentioned a few pages back can make for absolutely hilarity and terror when you first encounter them!

FYI Everything in the swamp is weak to blunt weapons like clubs and the mace. Enjoy the bog!

It was a leech, I think. Then my kid died to it and then again when running to his grave marker and then another time to the archer things. After all that we saw a slime bouncing around and coming our way, and my kid screamed and said he'd seen some dark flying monster swooping out of the trees (still don't know what this was or if he imagined it). At that point we just noped out of the swamps for the night. :)

Will look forward to that! It is great how the game throws unexpected challenges at you just when you feel you're getting on top of it.

This game is really amazing fun for us both with our very different gaming styles. I am highly cautious, always have my shield out and make sure I've got an escape route behind me and enough stamina to leg it if need be. My kid refuses to ever switch out from his atgeir which does do great AoE damage, but leaves him constantly vulnerable, and he wades in swinging it wildly at whatever comes our way. Every time I look at his character, his HP are like 1/3 to 1/2 full. I don't know how he lives like that!

They didn't imagine it ;)

These are wraiths. Due to their flying ability it makes them annoying to get away from in the water if you're low on health. They also disappear in the day time as far as i can tell.

Maybe with this one it's worth going into it as early access. It probably won't be out of early access for a long time. For example, the published roadmap includes 1 new biome and 1 new boss in 2021. There are at least 4 more bosses to add to the game. Since every boss so far has its own biome and that seems to be deliberate, that implies at least 4 more biomes. Which implies a lot of time will pass before Valheim is out of early access.

The game works as it currently is. You're missing the end goal of ascending to Valhalla, but unlike many early access games Valheim is pretty much a complete game (especially if you like building stuff) and it's very stable.

I installed a few mods today and that made things much nicer. Valheim Plus, which has configurable settings for most of the changes I wanted and many more that I didn't want (but some players do want). A quick run through the config file to enable the few things I wanted and job done. Enable carrying metal through portals, extend the building radius from workstations to more than a couple of Planck lengths, disable stamina use with building tools only. Getting ready for some proper building! A few other little mods. One to autorepair items when you interact with the relevant workstation. One to allow the changing of portal pairing on the fly - interact with a portal, choose which portal it pairs with from a dropdown list of your portals. One to select snapping points when building...but that one isn't working for me and I don't know why but I suspect a conflict with Valheim Plus. Maybe I'll enable the enchanced building options in Valheim Plus and use those instead.

lmao, that sounds like an incredible experience - to play VIKING alongside your kids and discover new lands and mobs. As said, it was a Wraith. I recall when my friends and I found our first crypts in the swamps - it took way too long. We setup a small wooden fenced 'protected' outpost by the waters edge and sat by a fire talking about our clownish strategies for the night ahead as the crypt was deep inside the swamp. Next thing we know a Wraith appears outside the fence and just hovers over it and massacres half of us before we took it out!

The entire night of just getting to the actual crypts from that base was fraught with danger let alone getting out of the crypts with iron alive!

On another note - since I reached endgame a while ago I used the console window for the first time earlier in the week. I've had enough of 'Wind' on the seas and the absolutely BS mechanic, which is definately coded to be against you the moment you set foot in a boat. I used a command to change the wind direction just because I didn't have 30mins spare for a boat journey - after work hours that is the last thing you need.

It really is epically brilliant and we are having a great time together!

Fortunately for our first time in the biome, it turns out we had stumbled into possibly the smallest swamp it's possible to conceive. A little strip of swampland along the coast, and with only one crypt right on the meadows border. Once we'd figured that out it was easy to skirt around the swamp itself and run straight to the crypt from the meadows, and then equally simple to the same in reverse to get our iron back to the boat.

Which, yeah, had the wind against it 75% of the way and became a very tedious journey. I would also be very interested in something to change the wind mechanic and it is the one thing that is draining some fun from an otherwise superb gaming experience.

But we only made out with about 35 iron which is nowhere enough so now we need to scope out a new, larger swamp...

You get a power from the mountain boss that changes the wind to be directly behind you

Sadly even that power isn't all that. It is very short with a long cooldown (around 18-20mins iirc?) so I rarely use it but yeah it helps a tiny bit.

Good for group exploration if you all have it though as you fire it off one after the other so you can cover quite a bit of the map in a relatively short amount of time.

That does sound very useful, but it is a fair way off for us.

Although my morning exploration yielded some swamp we can reach overland. It's a fair trek, but relatively flat and so probably preferable to navigate that with a cart rather than going by sea. It also might give us the nudge we need to build a more satisfactory base near there as well. It seems a much better location. Maybe a stone building this time...

Once you start building with stone, watch your stone stocks plummet within seconds ;)

I'll join in here as this bit's relevant to me:

How much is a realistic amount of stone to make a start? So far, I have about 4000 stockpiled. I've been gathering stone on and off pretty much since I started and I have rows of chests full of it.

Swamp is probably my next step. I can't progress further without iron. L3 bronze weapons, tools and armour. Can't build in stone without having iron. Already found the trader and bought the headlamp for exploring crypts more conveniently. I haven't brewed poison resistance potions yet, so that's the next thing.

I might move to another world to get iron, then return to my home world. I don't want third stage mobs attacking my temporary wooden hall while I'm building my castle, so I don't want to kill any bosses until my castle is finished.

Why store it in chests and not piles?
