I was talking to a girl last night who is a vegan and among her little preaching anecdotes she was trying to explain to me that milk is one of nastiest things I can drink.

I don't understand this concept. Humans drink milk from their mothers. Her argument was that you dont see a goat drinking a cows milk. Also cows are slaughtered at age 5 when their milk production starts to decrease. I still think the idea is ridiculous. Dairy cows eat grass and poo, they are mindless beasts.

And... meat tastes good. :D In my opinion.

I just wanted to hear everybodys opinion about this. Is it a legitimate, sensible practice or just a trendy, pretencious fad adopted by the middle-class alternative hip-parade?

her view is from the animals welfare point i.e. which is that cows have to be kept permanently pregnant in order to give milk & that the calf is often taken away at 2 days for the veal market

At the end of the day its a persons choice, and so as long as you don't try and convert me at every oppurtunity or preach to me about how wrong it is to eat meat etc, I couldn't care less whether you do or don't eat any animal products.

naturally we should not drink any other animals milk (although I do :D ) our stomachs are still not adapted to digesting it (it is meant for beby cows) so tecnically she is right but milk tastes yummy and so do steaks :p

The human being is an omnivore(sp?) and as such should dine ona mixture of dead animal and garnish. Milk is very nice, nutricious and makes my cornflakes edible of a morning.

Vegans/veggies need to be told a the new Kitchster food groups, all five of them. They are

1: Cow
2: Chicken
3: Pig
4: Beer

and anything that doesn't fit those four...

5: Garnish

A healthy, balanced diet is achieved by consuming a balance of these things. *

*I take no responsibility for any increase in the levels of over-weight fat people kicking around the boards

Well we breed these animals for their meat and their milk, I don't see how this is wrong, what I don't understand is, if these vegans don't eat fish because they don't want to kill their friends the fish, and don't want to drink milk because it's disgusting (lol!) where do they get their calcium from? Salads? :D

ps don't they deny their actual nature though? Animals kill eachother to feed, why shouldn't we?

Milk good. Napster Bad.

(so long as it's full fat... none of that semi-skimmed nonsense) ;)

I've got more respect for vegans than I have for political vegetarians. Either you accept exploitation of animals or you don't. You can't adopt some sort of middle ground for your own convenience.

Isn't veal illegal in the UK now?

Tbh, people can be vegans and vegos if they want.
Its only when they go all natural that starts pushing the limits.

No, I had some at the weekend (the laws changed regarding how it is produced). I personally am not a Vegan but I can understand perfectly why other people are. If I was at a friends place and they were Vegan I am quite happy to eat Vegan while I am there. It's not really that big a deal. In fact if a Vegetarian or Vegan was staying at my place I wouldn't mind having everything Vegan/Vegetarian for the duration of the stay (my sister is Vegetarian). Whilst I think milk is great I can see where they are comng from easily.

If meat tastes good then surely that means we were meant to eat it. Also the fact that we have canine teeth for tearing meat with.

Another thing that gets on my t*** is that veggys will eat fish. Talk about two faced imo, because fish are not furry and warm...

A friend of mine when we were young was a veggy (influenced by his mother at that age) and by god did he look pasty.

When on holiday in greece I heard on of the girls on a boat trip say

"im not eating that (pointing at burgers) im a vegetarian, but ill have one of those (points at a chicken burger).

It's not illegal but it's a cruel practice that's becoming rarer now due to pressure.

Should be illegal.

Nature is cruel, how about these hippies wake up and realise that the tigers are not cuddly stuffed animals but slay their food? Pretty much like a cat is playing with her dying mouse.

Too right. Nature is a bitch and so am I.

Bring on cannibalism I say!

Nature is cruel but that's an incredibly poor argument for supporting cruelty to animals. Personally I'm a meat lover but don't eat veal as the treatment of the animals is extremely poor. That's not to say that the treatment of other animals isn't bad but at least it's a small step in protest.

Humans are part of nature. Humans have a desire to rape and kill their neighbours. Should we accept it as part of nature being cruel?

Of course not. We've developed to the point where we can reason and take steps to prevent unnecessary cruelty. That's what seperates us from the tiger who doesn't understand that his actions cause suffering.

I actually quite admire vegans, at least they stick to their principles. Likewise I don't mind vegetarians who don't eat meat beacuse they don't like the taste/decide it's healthier. It's the ones who harp on about animals 24/7 and try to guilt trip you for having a ham sandwich that get right on my nerves...
