Vegas Hotels

I am going to be staying in the luxor next month. I know its meant to be old and dated. But as long as its clean, plus i like it being on the end of the strip, but even better after expedia sales it cost me around £140 for 4 nights.

Any got any experience with shooting guns? i have heard Gun Store is the place to go, any other good options?

Also regarding grand canyon, anyone done a trip there without plane of helicopter? I always wanted to fly around, but now i am swaying towards more of a trip that has a hike into the canyon.

Will be staying at the MGM Signature come June. Anyone else stayed here? What are people's thoughts on hotel? I know it's a little further out, but I don't mind the walk, other than that negative, are there any more?

Cheers

off to vegas in less than 2 weeks!

what do people do about cash?
just take dollars?
travellers cheques?
use my debit / credit cards? will i pay fees for doing this ?

I stayed in it last year, Tower B on the 63rd floor. Amazing views, rooms are amazing, really really nice and comfy. 2minute walk and your into MGM grand casino, and 5minutes onto the strip through MGM grand, really nice hotel, IMHO from what I have seen MGM is the best hotel there.

I used my bank card that has the same protection as a credit card, no point walking around with 1000s of dollars. When you can just pay like £1 for a transaction when getting money out.

In the times I've been I've always just taken cash.

Seems to be so much easier to buy stuff rather than faffing with signatures espically in the casinos, and the temptation of just drawing out more money if so much larger.

I'd just take what you can afford to lose in cash and leave your card at home. or tucked deep away in a suitcase just in case of emergencies.

Taking cash is a daft idea, it'll cost you more money and then you've got security concerns too.

It's a bit late with 2 weeks to go but the correct credit card is the best option. With the right one, ie Halifax Clarity, you can pay for items by card with no fees, no extra charges and the best exchange rate. You can also withdraw money from ATM's if you want cash and all you pay is interest from the day of withdrawl which works out at about 1% per month outstanding.

All other methods, ie prepaid cards, taking massive piles of cash, etc will cost you more.

yeah been reading about it all, those cards sound good but think the easiest option - and not really time for much else is :

is £500 cash converted into dollars
and use my Barclaycard for everything else (£1500)
should only cost me £45 to access all £1500 cash (in smaller chunks over the 2 weeks when needed ) which is cheaper than converting and taking all cash as long as I don't draw out less than £100 at a time?

no interest to pay either as long as I clear it when I get home (which I will)

although just released, will I pay credit card changes for the stuff i booked online hotels / car hire etc?

got a week in caesars palace in may for honeymoon, then mustang out to la for another week lol

never been to the states before so looking forward to it a fair bit!

I wouldn't worry at all, some of the advice in this thread I have to really question as someone who goes to California every year these days.

For a start LA has some lovely parts, and some utterly horrible ones. LA is VAST and incredibly diverse. There is no way as a first time visitor I would pick San Francisco over LA.

You can easily soak a week up in LA, its a great place to go and I am sure you will have a great time. As a first time visitor you can do the cheesy ball-game, theme park, Hollywood stuff too :)

Edit: Las Vegas, Caesars is still hardly bad. The strip hotels in Vegas are all huge and well appointed and while you have not booked the best hotel IMO, you will hardly have a bad time and I am sure it will still blow you away.

ATMs are not a great idea in Vegas, the ones in the casinos are expensive and others very scarce, I use cash for grneral stuff, a Caxton pre payment (with Amex back up) restaurants / shopping etc

I guess that depends if you have a car, for example there are free ATM's at Walmart on E Tropicana about 5-10min drive from the strip if you are exploring a bit anyway. You can just take a bunch of cash out at one of them every couple of days which isn't too much hassle.

I did the gun store last year and had a great time. They have a very slick and efficient setup, with a nice selection of guns. I believe there are a few competitors now, I can't remember the names of them, but you'll see massive bill boards advertising their services. To be honest, unless there is a big difference in price, I'd stick with the gun store. For most people this is a one off thing to do. Why risk a poor experience to save a few quid.

I think you get a free crappy T-shirt at the gun store too. Which is nice, as long as you don't mind looking like a nutter when you get home.

In a Casino, sure. There are plenty of Walmart's around Las Vegas and visiting one a couple of times and withdrawing the max if you are some sort of big-spender is less hassle even than faffing around getting currency in the UK.

I was not charged to withdraw cash at Walmart.

There are no charges/commission at the bank end with the Clarity - just the interest - hence the recommendation.

The rooms are amazing, 900Sq/ft or something like that the one we stayed in, also with balcony's. Better views now than when we stayed as the building work opposite has finished.

However we did find it a fair trek everyday. It's a long walk through the MGM and then onwards to wherever you a heading. TBH now I would probably stay at Bill's again, it dead central, quick to exit out and 1/4 or 1/5th the cost, just doesn't have the Wow factor, but still decent.

.

afaik all walmarts are off strip, no idea what you calss as a big spender but I would need to go to ATM probably once a day and thats a lot of hassle

You'd need to spend £300 a day in cash to need to need to visit daily!

And if you are shifting that much cash then the size of the ripoff you'd get from changing the money before leaving is even bigger :p

This is exactly my experience, but;

This argument depends on whether you have a car, if you do, free cash is easy to get, the Walmart on E Tropicana is <10mins from any of the big hotels by car, plus you probably need to top up your suites kitchen which is best done at a supermarket off strip anyway.

If you dont have a car, you cant really get any commission free cash...

Our first experience was at the Gun Store, it was ok. But they watched you like a hawk, didn't allow you to handle magazines or ammunition etc.

It depends what you want, if you only want to fire off some guns then it's great, but I found the experiences we have had elsewhere more rewarding.

We have been into Gun Ranges at various places in the US, and everyone except the Gun Store it was a case of Renting a lane, whatever gun and buying boxes of ammo. They give you a quick demo on how to load and handle the gun and off you go, unattended. It's quite daunting a first loading magazines but it is good fun and there is always someone around to help.

The Gun Store is pretty expensive as it's tourist aimed, but they do have a large selection. When we went back to Vegas in 2010 we went to American Shooters. http://www.americanshooters.com/
