I don't believe it actually falls within the national park either... sounds a bit naff then... I guess the south rim is the place to go then?

It's a totally naff tourist trap - sure it's not exactly rubbish to look at but the cost of getting in makes what looks initially like a cheaper alternative to doing it properly just as expensive as the proper Canyon.

aaaah

says on hertz paperwork i just printed that i need paper part of licence to hire car in US

can i find the bloody thing ?!?!!

anyone needed this when hiring from hertz usa ? vegas pickup
got 1 week tomorrow so gonna ring dvla some people online saying they got it in 4 days so fingers crossed

help!

Never needed it, Americans don't have paper licenses so I don't think they know that we even have them. Whether I would risk going all the way there knowing I will be totally screwed if they did ask for it, is another question though :p

If you qualify for an online driving licence replacement, I can confirm that it will arrive within 5 days - mine did, last week. Cost £20.

I'm now thinking of adjusting my trip and actually landing in Vegas, then driving across to San Fran (see Yosemite and Death Valley) and flying back from there. Will 8 nights be achievable for this? I really can't do any longer...

Yes, 8 days is acheivable for that but flying into Vegas and out of SFO is a recipe for very expensive flights. It seems a shame to spend that much on flights to only stay for a week.

If you only have a week for a holiday I wouldn't go to the West Coast of the USA, personally. You need more time to both appreciate it properly and justify the 11 hour not particularly cheap flights.

Thanks - so you would recommend just staying around the Vegas area in this timeframe? Relax the time a little and see canyon, Yosemite, death valley etc?

Flights aren't so bad as I fly BA with work all the time and have enough points for me and the ball/chain at least premium economy both ways....

No, I'd recommend not going to North America at all - perhaps New York. But I doubt you'll agree so if you insist on flying all that way for 8 days then your planned route does work and will give you enough time to do Vegas, Death Valley, Yosemite and San Francisco :)

I realise everyone is different but if I'm going to spend a total of 24 hours of my life sat on a plane I want to benefit from more than just a week for it! :p

Redeem for Club World or above, using mileage for Economy or PE is a massive ripoff - most of the fare is taxes and the ridiculous BA fuel surcharge they seperate out and charge you even if you are using miles - so you'll end up saving hardly anything and still paying a load out for the privilage.

It's really not that bad - I can fly PE return for ~£400 a person depending on dates which is fine by me with the amount of points I have/will get this year.

I fly to the US (west mostly) enough as it is with work, and typically for 5-7 days so I'm not too worried about just going for 8 days, but I do understand your point (I spent 3 weeks in Thailand before Christmas and that wasn't enough to see everything :-))

But in this case, 8 days is really what I can manage due to other commitments so if Vegas to San Fran is do-able I'm really happy to go with it, but do appreciate advice from those that have been there before :-)

I guess I will need to pay a surcharge to drop the car in a different destination (as was the case when I did the Canadian rockies a few years back)?

It *is* that bad - because it's not £400 per person its £400 + the mileage per person, the mileage has significant value. You are losing all that mileage AND also having to pay 400 quid on top. This is really bad value. You will get soooo much more value if you used them for Club World instead (Because a much higher percentage of a CW fare is the actual fare, which is what you get for the miles).

BA are really sneaky with the fuel surcharge - other airlines don't do it like this, you just pay taxes.

Working it out I spent 3 nights in Vegas, drove thorugh Death valley and stayed in Bishop about 2 hours the other side, then the next day did Yosemite and stayed just outside in Modesto, then into San Francisco for 2 nights.

So thats 7 nights. So yea, it works fine. That included a Canyon trip too.

No, one-way is generally free between Neveda and California.

Thanks Fox, appreciate your help. You did a plane trip to the Canyon if I remember correctly? We will do the same I think.

I know it's not particularly great use of Avios, but I have so many (and have already done a couple of CW European flights this year using them) and will accumulate more by the end of the year that I may as well just use them.

If you are staying at any of the CET hotels then register online for a total rewards card, usually gets you a small discount

A benefit of hotels.com is:

a) You get about 10% through Quidco
b) You get WelcomeRewards credits, which give you a 'free night' for every 10 you book. This works out at another 10% off, basically.
