View from the Shard

This was being built when I was working in the city near completion, but when you put it in perspective, it's hardly that impressive or a feat of engineering in comparison to this? I worked 5 mins from the Gerkin and when that was finished I took a look from ground level and wondered what all the fuss was about. Just more empty real estate blotting Londons landscape.

No way, I hate touristy crap like that. "Hey let`s wait an hour in the queue in the rain so than we can pay £25 for like 10min of experience of looking down some buildings and enjoying ourselves tremendously."

Haha, not a chance. London's finest traffic wardens gave me a £120 parking ticket for delivering structural steel for the shard building, whilst waiting in a specific construction waiting zone. 'i'm not bitter' lol

I'm sure it'll be a good view up there, but too expensive really.

Rip off & not even that high. I shan't bother.

Interestingly it is almost £10 cheaper to go up the Burj Khalifa which as well as being more than twice as high also has the far more impressive accolade of being the worlds tallest building.

What makes The Shard worth an extra £10?

It does seem very expensive compared to similar experiences elsewhere in the world - it is more expensive than both the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and the Empire State Building in New York City, both of which are arguably more iconic and more sought after buildings.

My understanding was it actually was about the same as the Empire State, which is how they justified it.

Tallest building in the European Union.

And yes, I'd pay, it's not really that much in the end.

Yeah, tallest in EU, but not tallest in Europe, there's one in Russia somewhere that's taller.

To be fair, having worked near it just as it was being finished, it didn't seem that tall, but then when you get told that on a clear day you can see the sea from the top, it does kind of emphasise how tall it is...

Floor 69 is the viewing gallery (giggle away), and it's something like 30m+ for the top floor apartments.

Bottom area will be offices, then there's a hotel, with pool etc... Then the viewing gallery, then apartments. (I think) Apartments have access to hotel facilities.

Going up in February, however if it's anything like the Eiffel Tower, it might arguably be pointless as that kind of flattens everything else around it.

I wasn't too enamoured with the Shard until I realised that the following childish exchange:

"Hey OCUK, where should I take my girlfriend?"

"Uh, up the Eiffel Tower!"

is actually even funnier* when the response is:

* subjectively funnier, your mileage may vary, please look both ways before crossing busy roads.

The Burj Khalifa was about £20 to go to the top and that is taller! I actually think I might pay £25 to go up The Shard.

Two actual LOLs in one morning, you are doing well today!

Why pay for something I can see on youtube/google?

Now, I wouldn't be happy paying £50 to take my girlfriend up the Shard (not sure that one will ever get old) - but surely you can differentiate between experience something "in real life" rather than just on Google or Youtube?
