Viewsonic 22" Widescreen is coming.....

No point IMO.

Same resolution as a 20.1" WS, so all it is doing is stretching the image.

Better quality from a 20.1"

It's like going from a 17" TFT to a 19" TFT, no point at all :)

What it seems to me is that manufacturers are preparing the low spec and cheap 22" monitor options. Marketing accent is purely on the screen estate upgrade, but I think that screen (picture) quality may suffer ... especially if they will follow the suggested low pricing model and cheap panels (like CMO) implementation. Of course, this is interesting for the people who are keen to upgrade to few inches more but not care that much about the other monitor aspects. Maybe I'm wrong, but this is the general "feeling" I have about the 22" situation. Also, we are still unsure about the native resolution supported. If they will not move from the 20" typical 1680x1050, I don't see much sense in that. You will probably have larger pixel pitch because of those 2" extra, as panel will carry the same 1680x1050 resolution. For the picky users, maybe sticking to high quality 23"/24" ... or even 20" models is better option.

Will see ...

These look great!

Well the specs do anyway...

I was gonna get a 1680 x 1050 monitor but I'm worried about this resolution for games. It would bug me if i had to play with black bits either side (Another point, does it have 1:1 mapping?) and it would also bug me if it stretched the picture and looked rubbish, no wonder they're cheaper than 1600 x 1200 tfts.

Does anyone know of any games that run at 1680 x 1050?

Look at the widescreen gaming forum. They have a list of games where widescreen is supported or can be made to work in widescreen. If you need to edit then it also explains how to do so.

It's just increasing the pixel size and/or the gaps between the pixels. Many people prefer a slightly lower resolution so things remain larger, and it also means you've got a bigger physical surface to look at compared to a 20" monitor. I currently run my Dell 21" P1110 at 1280x960 instead of 1600x1200 because I find it more comfortable to read when I've been at the computer for a lot of the day working / gaming. Furthermore, an increase of resolution requires significant horsepower to keep a good framerate when playing games; the 22" option is good for those whose PCs won't be able to handle higher resolutions when gaming. I always build my PC on a budget and then get the most for my money as I'm a student, so buying a monitor with a really high resolution would be gaming suicide :P

It's not pointless, it's just down to your taste / needs. If two LCD TVs run at the same resolution but differ in size, would you say it's pointless to get the larger one even if it's only marginally more expensive? Bigger does not always mean better, but it's useful for some things.

LOL ... look at that black gloss; it's pure S&M PVC hell :p It's OK to be different, but it looks to me as the design department was doped big time :D Anyhow, someone may like this ... so it's probably not fair to generalise my thoughts.

I've noticed the availability on this item is listed as mid-August on OCUK, as well as many other retailers.

However, when I emailed Viewsonic to enquire when they expected UK availability they replied:

The units will be arriving in our warehouse towards the end of
September, therefore available in the UK in the beginning of October

Who's correct on this? Just looking for a date when I can get it through my front door!

Don't think thats gloss m8 looks like it has a clear sticker over the top, the darker patches look like thats where its stuck better to the case. Be like one of those sticky sheets that stick with static on moby phones when you get em out of the box. Don't think they would have a glossy finish it would look garbage, not that its a super model but the asthetics coud be better, like drop the speaker and just have a thin frame, NEC 20.1 thats a better example of design, but more sheep buy monitors from highstreet shops "spit" and they will be the major buyers by volume, sheep probably buy if it has speakers and just bleet on and buy some other brand if no speakers are installed. So they cater to the sheep, but if sheep buy more it can make things cheaper for us so swings and roundabouts with the sheep situation, just my ten pence on that subject, probably wrong as usual lol.
