Vince's Ebay Repair Thread - (Console Repairs & Mods)

Hey Vince,

Got a 1080Ti that's died, fans don't spin, no lights and touching the core when powered on, it's cold. Would you say this was a voltage regulator that's died? Worth a punt at trying to fix it?

It's a Gigabyte Aorus card

It's not that uncommon for replacement pots to be a bit crap, what are tye replacements you are using? You using alps or just whatever you can get your hands on?
I just bought a kit off amazon, I just fitted another one (was a pack of 2) to the other pad I bought and that one works fine, if you could pm me a link to the ones you buy that'd be good please.

On the calibration tool, with the not working controller, no movement whatsoever is detected when I move it, so it could just be a broken pot?

Got a multimeter? If its a 12v short it's commonly a mosfet that's died.. you can test at the two 8 pins and at the 12v pci-e for a short...

What are the pots in ps5 are they 10k like the xbox? Generally ill buy packs of 20 or 50 and I'll throw away 10% before even fitting.

Yeah it's not like the 1070 i had before, that was lighting up and fans spin but no picture. This is just totally dead, doesn't even get hot.

yea depends what line the short is on... if its not lighting up at all thats on its main power rail... so the 12v rail rather than say a secondary rail that relies on the primary rail. Basically it depends where the short is to if it will try and boot or not.

Err pass  edit just bought a 10 pack of hall effect sticks, meant to be the best, pricier but hopefully worth it.

That's one way of doing it. The halls are better but not infallible either and I've had halls that drift.

Here is a video on testing pots :D

I will point out that if it is only 9k full range that will decrease the range of the stick at stock if the stock one was say 10k unless calibrated. Calibration generally tests the range of the stick by doing exactly what we just done with a meter and mapping those values to the extremes of the stick.

When you talk about measuring before you put it in you take the range of the one in there and match it to a similar value one in your pile of sticks.

This is super useful, thank you so much for taking the time with me here, really appreciated! I hope all the Halls in the pack I get are good in that case, £14 for 10 so not too bad price wise but about double the cost of Amazon specials.

My 3rd and final Dualsense should arrive today, so will be remove those later then the family have a controller each for the PS5 :D

Looking at some Switch lites to repair, slippery slope...that looks a lot more complicated though.

yea with switches you are working with tiny components so the kit requirements to repair switches expands somewhat, much of what you will need to do is either QFN / BGA so a rework station is needed. And unless you have the eyes of a god you will likely need a scope as well.

got a link for the hall effects you grabbed?

Sent you a PM as unsure on rules for sending the links etc

today we are on a mission to correct massive amounts of damaged VIA's on a pokemon mini where battery acid has clearly leaked on the board... It wouldnt boot but we have sorted that... now im searching for issues with the eeprom...

Lots of grinding and running jumpers but we are getting there

Edit: eeprom issues now fixed next up a and b buttons don't work so we need to fix those as well. Luckily a mate of mine made a superb little app for the pokemon mini...

Absolute life saver! basically everything in the affected area was broken, eeprom connections, sys reset, power lines to one of the diodes and the A and b buttons. Reality is I've spent nearly 2 hours on it so far so it probably wasn't worth fixing but im having fun and nothing more satisfying when that little screen springs into life.

Before I mask the board up and put it back together ill get some pics of the various jumper wires and via repairs.

I've worn out the rubber covering the Xbox Elite controller 2 thumbsticks

Can I get official replacements? You can buy them from Microsoft in the USA, but I couldn't see any equivalent for the UK: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/b/xbox-repair-parts

The elites have an accessory set... what thumbsitcks are you looking for as it comes with loads.... second ill grab a pic.

Each one appear to come with 6 different sticks...
