Vince's Ebay Repair Thread - (Console Repairs & Mods)

Right liquid metal turned up today thanks... I did want to point something out with the machine so will do that for you as im re-assembling... just something to be aware of in the future. I'll put some photos in here etc of the repair tomorrow. Shipping wise can we work that out over in PM :D - Standby for some pics rocking and ready to come home.

So hopefully you can see, there is marking on both the cpu and the cooler, presumably the liquid metal is eating away at it.

and the repair:

Now the mask is there because i laid down a tiny jumper to reinfoce what was left of the trace once i scraped away and used some vinegar to get rid of the corrosion, its this area of the board....

It's ready to come home but @embalse can I just keep it, I really like it :D Ryzen 9 5900hs and RTX 30080... nice!!!

I guess its time to box her back up now.. nothing more to do here. The saying no need to cry over spilt milk has never been so apt :)

I think I am all repaired out tonight now. Ive done a switch where there was no fan spin, really common for the fet to basically stall if the fan is broken so you replace the fan and it still doesnt work. I just inject like a volt into the pwm circuit and it always shocks it back into life normally accompanied by a little spark. :) so thats done. Laptop done, I fixed a joycon with a missing R button, buying parts for switches isn't part of my vocabulary so I'm stealing it from this switch lite donor board:

And when its done:

Got some other work to do alongside this one so i'll crack that out and get this back home as well:)

I installed a trinket into a v1 unpatched:

pretty cool idea but if you have never done one before like me getting your head around what firmware, settings, optional straps and if you need them etc is a total minefield. There is huge amounts of documentation because there are about 20 versions of the trinket so trying to work out what you need, how to wire it up and what firmware and settings you need is a commitment. Once it's all up and working though its pretty cool.

I think ive covered just about every switch mod now from the oled to the lite and now the v1 so this will be the last mod on a switch I post :)

You are certainly switched on @Vince :p

It's all a bit of fun. I'm not a big fan of these not purpose built solutions because of all the faff it's never put it on there and press go, you always end up flashing several firmwares and settings. Moving swiftly on! My order from the great lands of China just got in :)

Doesnt look like a lot but we have 2x GG LCD mods, 1x DMG ips Mod, GBC Shell and IPS mod, Neo Geo Mods including IPS, bare Nintendo GBA board for me to populate (the 42pin variant with the lcd bias circuit). Loads of Gameboy caps. Hidden in there is also a GBC battery mod for my q5 modded GBC :)

I stumbled on a temp controlled soldering station on Facebook today. I’m used to my decades old weller iron and 3 tips lol. I need to figure out what temps I should be using. Hobbyist Electronics repair gear doesn’t seem to be scandalously expensive, I might get back into this as a hobby. Just to need to find a kid free corner of this house.

It's really not I have a quidco T12 clone that uses T12 or T15 tips and new they cost about £30 little oled screen on it (yea right cannot confirm true) and temp controlled. My temps are totally dependent on the tip im using and what im soldering. Small tips will typically need more heat especially when working on small ground plane points that suck away the heat happily. On something like a game gear i'm generally at around 350 ish as the old leaded solder flows pretty well and the board is wafer thin. On something like a switch which a lot more dense and uses unleaded you going to need more heat im often up in the mid 400's on a switch with the smaller tips like the c1 or jl01

My total setup really wasn't that pricey for what I would class as essentials

1) High Cloud 4K Scope and boom arm (approx £130)
2) 858D Rework station (£30/£40)
3) Temp controlled iron (£30)
4) Meter (could spend £5 and be good for years I recently upgraded to a £30 meter)

Optional

- Bench Power Supply (£50)
- Oscilloscope (£50)
- Ammeters (I have a couple and the mid range £10 one is the one I commonly use rather than the £50 one)

So for a little over £200 you can have all you need to fix pretty much anything.

Top man :) Watching the youtube repair video's, im expecting the air to be a tad blue around your repair table.

Ahh ill pre heat the decvice on my 600w 240v printer bed before I even try and get the screen out :D leave it on there for 5 mins at about 150 and it should pop out no problem :D Ill probably burn myself on it though... normally do
