Virgin 20meg upgrade it's a joke

whats most likely is either your hardware cant support it, your snr is too high, or and most likely, everyone is trying to download big files or doing speedtests at the same time because 20mbit just got sorted out.

give it a week or so!

Doggo, have you tried downloading a file as above?

tried downloading a demo game from the blueyonder server link that was posted earlier on in this thread and got rubbish results, it was going to take something like 1 1/2 hours to download 170mb.

it looks like the problem is wide spread, hopefully the tech guys at VM will pull their finger out and sort things.

I'd vote for this as I could happily download at 10mb before the upgrade so my SNR is obviously fine.

FYI:-

Downstream Receive Power Level : -2.48 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 34.02 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 53.00 dBmv

I'm pinging about 80ms to UK servers at the moment... I've asked people online in completely different areas of england on virgin and they are getting **** pings too... Anyone else getting this?

Watch your language!

No mine seems fine:

am getting slow speeds also. It has been at 1.8mb/s from ScT but its dropped now to 500kb/s.

I think it could be a cap so ill retest in the morning

run a speedtest to see if your upload is at 30KB/s if yes then your being shaped.

There is an open case for this on the service status page for Virgin Media :)

Indeed, as shown here.

Virgin media customers on the Broadband XL (20Meg) service might be experiencing slow speeds when downloading files. This issue is not affecting customers that have Scientific Atlanta or Motorola Cable modems

Can anyone who has either of these modems confirm a reliable fast service?

I was at the full 20MB for around 2 days after the upgrade here in Notts, but since then it has been hovering at around a 5MB connection or lower :/

Very much doubt it's anything to do with my setup, so I'm hoping its the issue on the status page above.

just checked several servers using speedtest and the best I get here in Cardiff is 5.5mb.
We'll just have to see what happens over the next few days, pritty poor for Virgin though I have to say, there again I suppose given past experiences it's a bout par for the course.

doggo

No matter where i look on forums everyone is moaning about VM broadband speeds, its starting to make me think about not joining when we move and maybe going with Sky LLU.

I was on VM, I spoke to sky support about some poor stability on my line and they found a fair number of errors on the line which was corrected and have yet to suffer any stability issues yet!

Btw I get 800k/s on the Blueyonder link above, this is connecting at 7.9MB.

I found if you post on skyuser forums or even here about any sky bb problems the guys that browse there and here are able to resolve these issues and will contact you, very helpful! :) - the normal hours peeps though seem to take ages to respond (if at all) when using the sky support form off their homepages.

This is just my opinion :D
the trouble with VM is when they make a mistake they do it in a big way and always have done not matter what they were called Cabletel, NTL or what ever.

They anounced the 20meg upgrade saying "it's a free upgrade" oh but by the way we are putting up the subs by £2, in my opinion they didn't spend the time checking their equipment and doing enough trials, now we have the resulting poor service and lots of upset customers, the expression booze up in a brewery springs to mind.

Mine has been pants since the upgrade - I was connecting just fine when on 10Mbps and could max out the speeds. Now I'm lucky to get 5Mbps and usually it's 2-3 if that :( A quick test right now from the http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/ is giving me 270kbps..

I will give them another week or so to sort it out then it's phone call time, I'm not at all happy about paying £37/month for a service we are clearly not getting..

Mine has been really laggy with games. Went to check speed and saw I have been upgraded to the 20mb !

I use these speed test:

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ says under 1mb

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.marsden/newspeedtest.html below says 7-14mb

http://www.wugnet.com/myspeed/speedtest.asp says 4mb

Upload seems fine though.

All this speed for £37 a month :p I'm thinking about going back to dialup at least most of the time I was getting 56k :D
