Virgin media... and so it begins. restrictions started.

Bangs head against wall, I cant remember how many threads about speedtest.net being absolutley guff for these kind of readings. Especially through peak hours..... VM as far as I know are not putting the new (better) limits on till after New Year, although their website has updated, or if its being rolled out across the UK in stages during January, I have no idea.

I am also aware that some area's are also getting better throughput than others due to take up of Bandwith, luck of the draw :( there I am afraid.

Was thinking the same thing. People take it as gospel. I feel sorry for ISPs sometimes.

It really depends on whether you live near an exchange server. Closer you are to one the better your download and rarity of loosing packets.

This is Cable though... distance should not make a difference, where as ADSL does make a difference.

He taught you crap then - to convert bits to bytes you divide by 8.
Dividing by ten is an approximation that you can do mentally, 9.6 is just stupid.

Was gonna say, I help look after the core/business network of the Telewest side of VM, all the QoS stuff we do for calculations to work out various values is all divided by 8, and most of that came from Cisco so 9.6 is  to me lol.

in that case i may have been taught incorrectly and will use 8 from now on. :)

but this is a little off topic so im going to drag us back on. its gone 9 and im still restricted... :(

thats for ADSL services only, cable isnt effected.

I feel sorry for you guys, i can't believe VM have screwed over the existing customers of NTL. Is there no way for you guys to leave as they changed their terms and conditions?

I used to be with NTL way back and the service was always good for me, and thats between 2 houses!

They haven't.. I'm sure it's a minority. I've lived in various counties and each and every one has been with NTL and I always have (and still do) max out my connection. To be fair, I would say VM still offer the best value for money. No caps, the fastest speed around (without having to live in your exchange), no traffic shaping, merely a reduced speed for a few hours a day. I can handle that.

I use newsgroups (and not speedtest.net) to measure my connection ;)

Go over the current restriction of max download in the current climate VM FUP then your restricted 4 hours till full download again.

Throttling aside for a moment (and yea the latest round of throttling annoys even me) if you try doing a speed test on the London server then doing it on the Irish server, you'll normally get quite different results, again another example of why Speedtest is lame :(

Just to prove you naysayers. Heres a speed test @ 5:30pm, so in Peak Time, after a week of downloading over 20gb of data according to my download monitor.

I get this: :p :D :D

Would you prefer shaping or a hard dl limit like 80gig a month ? i know which i prefer coming from 3 years of adsl, ok so your speed dies between 4-9pm but atleast you can download pretty much what you want.

Looks like I've just had my breaks slammed on too.
This sucks, sure I understand why they have done it but seriously, how the hell can they be even thinking of rolling out 50mb. It's like saying you can buy a Ferrari but only drive it at 10mph.
Oh and I'm on 4mb so I just got super screwed too, 1mb cap same as the 2mb package.
Why the hell am i even paying for 4mb now, I come home from work and cant even use the damn thing.

I'll just report what I already said about this before......
