Why feel sorry for us ? i know somone on 20 meg cable that downloads near as damn it 1 TB, you get 5 hrs of restrictions and then can max out 20 meg 19 hours of the day if you want.
In the restrictions i get 1800 kbs and rest of the time the full 2.3mbs, i got no complaints at all, nowt like 2300 kbs when you downloading

Its the fact they had the nerve to introduce 20 Meg broadband then charge you an extra 2 quid a month then cap it.
I'd rather have full on 10 Meg, no restrictions again. 20 Meg is a waste, you rarely max out the bandwidth.

I always max mine out on newsgroups 2.3mbs as said above use something different, if you want a free service like torrents then expect them to be slow.
I did some calculations on what you can do on 10 v 20 meg, in 24 hours you can dl 92.8 gig on 10 meg maxed out roughly, doing it on the 19 hours you would get on 20 meg you can do if you so wished 153 gig, and then another 10 gig @ 5 meg speeds.
The speed is there you just need to use something that can take advantage of it imo.

Well on various test my 20meg maxes at 10meg no matter wtf i have dl'ed or not
And as far as the time-cap for now the highest 3% of users this to me seems fooey
I seemed to get capped down to 10 no matter if i dl loads or don't even have cable modem powered on for a day or 2
Think they are capping all in my mind and people assume they're in the bad top 3%
Totally **** off with this ****** country so called broadband
Had 20meg from day 1, and was great, ok i used the bandwidth and stayed at 20meg speeds, then eased up on using the net and then NTL buy virgin mobile for 850 million just to use the "virgin media" brandname and my cables gone to **** (YES FOLKS, The amount of people out there think VIRGIN brought NTL, NO NO NTL bought Virgin Mobile for the NAME/Brand)

Can everybody complaining about poor Virgin Media speeds please log on to your router and change the outside or Wan interface (whatever plugs into your NTL modem) to half duplex?
Then report back with your findings.
Also check that your router will actualy support more than 10Mbps through the wan port as a lot do not.
The half duplex thing is the only way I can get the full 20mb. And I have tried this with a lot of expensive kit (currently a Cisco ASA 5505).
Edit: And do actual downloads from good sources as opposed to using Speed tests.
Then report back with your findings.

My Netgear WGR614 doesn't have this option.
I've been racking my brains trying to figure out why my BB seems capped at 1MB as I've just reinstalled Windows and thought it might be something to do with that.

Nor does my Linksys WRT54GR, how do you know if your router supports 20MB?
The WAN interfaces on those are probably exactly the same as the LAN physically. Even the cheapo routers support up to 100mbps through the WAN port.

Try just plugging directly into the Modem instead. I tested this with a Cisco 831, 1721 and an ASA 5505. They all auto negotiate to full duplex, but best download speed is at half duplex. Using the NTL 250 for the record.
